This is a special Portrait Friday- cheating a bit because I didn’t take it (on the account that I did not exist before 1990) but it’s worth sharing. December 1977. In what was possibly one of the worst years for New York City, my father was one of hundreds of thousands of Boricua youth trying to plot a course in a city they inherited at a time when it seemed no one wanted it. As a student at the then John F Kennedy High School, he would hang out all over the Bronx and Uptown. Which is where this photo came about. Him and a group of friends ended up in Inwood Hill Park (still a predominantly postwar Irish enclave at this time, with a growing Dominican population in part due to the authoritarianism of the Balaguer regime back in RD) and this was one of those shots taken that day on some mechanical Pentax camera that is probably lost to time. It was bitterly cold in the winter of 1977, but being young has a way of insulting you from the cold. In many ways, this photo is a time capsule of that era (check out the hat and afro!) but in many others it’s timeless. Growing up in the South Bronx, I often wonder how it must have felt for him coming from the sugar fields and alluvial valleys of Naguabo to 1970s South Bronx. I can debate about the Nuyorican Movement and its impact on the city, how Puerto Ricans were responsible for the modern Latino New York, and how Boricua contributions are often sidelined in the name of other causes but when I see this photo, I just think about my father. And how I wish I could go back in time and tell him how he’ll have the whole world in his hands one day. ______________ Taken December 1977 by a Pentax MX (most likely- watermark added with his permission:knowledge).
