Following the Spanish-American and Philippine-American Wars, Americans celebrated their new territorial acquisition of the Philippines with the Philippine Reservation, a 47-acre exhibit at the 1904 World’s Fair. . The exhibit was designed to represent the natural landscape of the Philippine Islands, featuring reproductions of ancient structures, exhibits of stolen artwork, and entire villages with more than 1,000 tribal men, women, and children to complete the “living zoo.” The demeaning exhibit was supposed to demonstrate the Indigenous way of life as savage and in need of change. . Pretty apt definition of “juxtapose” in my opinion. This double exposure was absolutely unintended, but the nearby church’s stained glass windows and the framed photo of two Filipino servants standing in the same dining room I was photographing is too good not to share. I was trying to take a photo of something more narratively focused using a prop, but sometimes your plans just don’t matter. Beyond my enslaved kabayan, another historical aspect about the room I intended to capture is the hidden liquor cabinet mirror that can be seen. A lever in the drawer below it would pop the mirror open. Implemented during prohibition, it’s another juxtaposition of what was being practiced vs what was being preached. A historical feature not pictured is the servants stair case hidden from guest view. Maybe “juxtapose” isn’t the word for this picture, but rather “injustice” or “inequality”. A historical feature of the system we all exist in. Absolutely intended. #film #filmphotography #photography #120 #120film #Yashica #YashicaD #6x6 #cinestill #cinestill400D #filipinoamerican #philippines #philippineamericanwar #immigration #injustice #inequality #localhistory #photojournalism

May 1, 1899, marked the first anniversary of Admiral George Dewey’s lopsided victory over the Spanish fleet in Manila Bay. Ironically, the atmosphere in Manila and in the provinces was extremely subdued. Obviously, there was a war ragging north and south of Manila. However, both parties in the conflict had benefitted from Dewey’s victory. May 1, 1899, was just another day in the bloody Philippine-American War. usa.inquirer.net/148888/may-1899-a-civil-war-within-the-philippine-american-war Tap the link on the bio to read more. When the American forces commenced their northern attack on General Emilio Aguinaldo’s troops on March 25, 1899, the operation took only six days to capture the Philippine capital of Malolos on March 31, 1899. The distance from the American entrenchments outside of Manila to Malolos in Bulacan Province was approximately 23 miles. The American advance north after the capture of Malolos was considerably slower. It took the Americans twenty-seven days, April 1, 1899, to April 27, 1899, to advance approximately 8 miles from Malolos to Apalit in Pampanga Province. Tap the link on the bio to read more. I was not familiar with Linda Ty-Casper until @literary.hazelnut and @exploding_galaxies put her on my radar. Linda Ty-Casper is a Filipino writer, who has authored over a dozen works of fiction, stories, and poetry. She is noted for her historical fiction set in the Philippines: the 1986 Philippine Revolution, the Philippine-American War, WW II, the Martial Law years and the post-Marcos days until the early 2000s. When @exploding_galaxies announced the reprinting of The Three Cornered Sun (1979), I checked if Ty-Casper’s titles are available at our local library. Thankfully a donated copy of Ten Thousand Seeds (1987) was at hand. #TenThousandSeeds is about American newlyweds, Edward and Calista Rowbotham, who follow George Dewey to Manila Bay in 1989 with vague feelings of fulfilling their lives the way that Edward assumed Dewey had fulfilled his own by defeating the Spanish fleet in a single morning; and his grandfather had, by fighting to the end in the Civil War. Calista sees the promise of the new frontier as a way of avoiding deciding whether to live in Boston or Richmond, then gradually realizes they could be the hope of mankind in the coming century. Their naiveté disappears, their goals alter, ad the Filipinos turn from the tyranny of the Spaniards to problems inherent in the postponed withdrawal of American “liberators.” If you’re a fan of historical fiction, I recommend this book. Ty-Casper writes elegantly and her characters are well-developed. Her writing allows the readers to examine the characters’ behaviors and to pay close attention to the social context in why they behave that way, shedding light in underlying issues. As one would soon realize, the White savior complex is evident in this story. Furthermore, the author thoughtfully describes how the personal and the global can intertwine in the midst of conflicts. I look forward to reading more of Ty-Casper’s writings. Happy reading! #filipinoauthor #filipinoliterature #philippineliterature #historicalfiction #philippinehistoricalfiction #philippineamericanwar

How important is it to know our history? 🦬♥️🦁 African Americans served in the U.S. Military during the Civil War and continued to serve afterward. Many of these soldiers went on to fight in the Spanish-American War and the Philippine-American War. Although the pay was low, only $13 a month, many African Americans enlisted because they could earn more and be treated with more dignity than they often received in civilian life. In 1866, Congress established six all-black regiments (consolidated to four shortly after) to help rebuild the country after the Civil War and to fight on the Western frontier during the Plains Wars. It was from one of these regiments, the 10th Cavalry, that the nickname Buffalo Soldier was born. American Plains Indians who fought against these soldiers referred to the black cavalry troops as “buffalo soldiers” because of their dark, curly hair, which resembled a buffalo’s coat, and because of their fierce nature of fighting. The Buffalo Soldier regiments went on to serve the U.S. Army with distinction and honor for nearly the next nine decades. The storied Buffalo Soldiers regiments ended during the Korean War and the institution of Executive Order 9981. @nationalparkservice @bobmarley #buffalosoldier #history #usmilitary #civilwarhistory #spanishamericanwarsoldiers #philippineamericanwar #plainswars #honor #courage #hero

Posted @withregram • @bayan_usa We enter this February — the anniversary month of the Philippine-American War — with 125 years of anti-imperialist struggle raging in our blood. This war began on February 4, 1899 and was the first overseas invasion by the US, which was a new and expanding imperialist power. The Philippine-American war ushered in more than a century of colonial and neo-colonial violence, exploitation, and oppression. It is a war that continues to this day, in both outright and subtle ways. This 125th anniversary serves as a sharp reminder to all Filipinos that the struggle for genuine sovereignty and democracy remains unfinished — a struggle we both inherited and carry forward. #USOutofthePhilippines #StruggleForNationalDemocracy #PhilippineAmericanWar

Do the expressions on these fellas look familiar? The museum staff who have teenagers in their lives sure do. These guys, however, had a serious job to do. The Philippine-American War began on February 4, 1899 with the Battle of Manila. This conflict is connected to, but separate from, the Spanish-American War. In the Treaty of Paris, which ended the latter, Spain ceded their claim over the Philippines to the US. And yet, the Filipino people, who declared independence from Spain in the summer of 1898, did not want to trade Spanish control for American control. They fought for their independence beginning a three-year war in which more than 4,000 American troops died. The US emerged victorious in 1902 and the Philippines spent time as a US territory and commonwealth before finally getting its independence in 1946. The Wisconsin National Guard served in the Spanish-American War but did not serve in the Philippine-American War. Still, hundreds of Wisconsin troops served in the Philippines as part of federal units, or even National Guard units from other states. Charles Post (at left), who settled in Birnamwood, Wisconsin later in life, served as a bugler with Company K, 13th US Infantry Regiment. He deployed to the Philippines in 1899 and served there for about a year before returning to the States. WVM proudly preserves the story of his service through the papers and photographs from his time in the Philippines that his family donated more than 50 years ago. 📸WVM.0529.I002e.01 #NationalGuard #PhilippineAmericanWar #WisconsinNationalGuard #thelook

Almon Barber Journal Series - Company A, First Nebraska from Spanish-American and Philippine-American Wars COLONEL STOTSENBERG KILLED IN BATTLE Sunday April 23rd 1899 Nice clear morning after the rain of last night but sun covering is pretty hot. The newspapers are all full about the new army saw which takes affect March the first 1899. The volunteers are entitled to be mustered out unless their service is absolutely necessary. If so can be held 6 month longer till regulars can take their places. This is a great question whether or not we will have to stay the six months. Today a reconnoitering party from General Macarthur’s division encountered a heavy force of insurgents near the town Guiguinto north of Malalos. The cavalry was making their usual patrol down along the river, the natives seeing them making their patrols at different times thought they would (?) a trap for our boys which was carried out in good shape. Our boys surrounded by the natives which came out in great mass. Our regiment was notified of this fact and immediately went out to their assistance and part of the South Dakoties. Our regiment marched up the close range of them in double quick time in front of works and their force was as strong. They were obliged to lay down behind a nice ridge and the Colonel sent back to the general for reinforcements. The general sent word back for him to withdraw his regiment. This the Colonel knew was sure death to our regiment so he said boys we will have to make the charge to save ourselves. So the order to the charge was given. Our boys sprang to their feet and away they went. Just then Colonel J Stotsenberg was shot through the breast and his last words were go on boys and our boys soon forced the natives back. The artillery was immediately sent out and down came very active work. The following is the list of dead and wounded from our regiment. Number dead two officers, 5 enlisted men / Number wounded two officers, 25 enlisted men Very fortunately no one out of company was hurt. #annabemispalmer #philippineamericanwar #warjournal #almonbarber #companyafirstnebraska #johnstotsenburg

Almon Barber Journal Series - Company A, First Nebraska from Spanish-American and Philippine-American Wars FIRST NEBRASKA FIRING AT GUIGUINTO Thursday, March 30th 1899 Rainy morning. Orders were for the quartermaster to unload all the rations and ammunition by the railroad track and as soon as the bridge could be fine for a railroad train to cross would take the rations up the track and be sent out to regiments. 8:00 o’clock this morning railroad train across bridge loaded up provisions and steamed up the track, the first train run by our boys. Voorhes Robbins with three prisoners went out to line to get the rations from train to company. Our lines advanced this morning, crossing river little before noon, then halted and cook dinner. Moving forward between one and two o’clock, meeting with a terrible hard engagement, both receiving front and flank firing. This was where Milton Lynde and (William) Orr were killed and Herbert wounded. There was two volleys of flank fire poured down our line dropping 13 men all at once out of the regiment. The boys said they were afraid to breathe for fear of inhaling half dozen bullets. The South Dakoties and Kansas also had hard fight losing very heavy. The ambulance wagons rushed to get the wounded back, after which was put on train and sent back to Manila. Herb cared well for. Our team train held here till morning but little to eat no coffee. #annabemispalmer #warjournal #philippineamericanwar #almonbarber #companyafirstnebraska

Almon Barber Journal Series - Company A, First Nebraska from Spanish-American and Philippine-American Wars Monday March 27th 1899 Very hot morning this morning. Our troop moved forward but a short distance till fire was opened. The natives making another hard stand about one mile from little town. This is where the South Dakoties and Montanas loss was heavy. The South Dakoties losing forty men killed and wounded. Our boys didn’t get much fire at this time, being off at the night, but the natives kept drifting around to the right of line. Our boys laying very low till 5:00 o’clock in evening. The natives coming up very close to our boys before seeing them and all at once our boys opened fire on them making a charge and killing good many insurgents. They charged through a terrible storm of bullets and their breast works piling the insurgents up in great shape. This was when Joe Scott was wounded in the knee. Some of the Aguinaldo regulars were in this fight. Colonel Stotsenberg was ordered back by general but Messenger shot before reaching him. Our company and regiment retreated back a short distance and camped. Our line didn’t move up any, still in camp at same place one and a half miles from little town. I took supper to boys two and a half miles with four prisoners. Made the trip and got back at 11:00 o’clock night and rested till morning. Herb standing, is well. #annabemispalmer #warjournal #philippineamericanwar #almonbarber #companyafirstnebraska

K and D made the charge on block house #7 in skirmish formation with Colonel Stotsenberg leading his men straight to the front under very heavy fire. This is when the Utah Boys done their work on the block house with the artillery, driving the insurgents out in front of the change. The insurgents were leaving the blockhouse and rushing for the bushes. Our boys shooting them down like rabbits to lay dead inside of about one acre of land besides the wounded that was carried off. D and K kept them retreating around in a semicircle crossing the San Juan River above the large bridge. Immediately after they had passed by the large bridge, Company I made a rush crossing the bridge at the same time the battling on the hill by the Englishman. House left their position with A company in the lead in column of 4 made for the bridge, the company passing over and the battery stopping on the bridge. This was when the hardest fighting was done. The artillery gushing forth, the harrows of destruction. At the same time the infantry in skirmish line foreseeing their way up the hill pouring the lead in to the natives, running and falling in every direction at the same time on the off site side of camp, up the river. The little boat did her great work, the woodpeckers begging. The insurgents running like rabbits, firing their guns on most every shop. This was surely a bewildering time for them. Down at Camp Dewey in our old entrenchment the Olympia ran up and fired lengthways and made a terrible slaughtering among them. This lasted till 3:00PM. At this time our boys had in our possession blockhouse number 7 and 8, powderhouse, the church, the old barracks and filtering station. This was all for today. #annabemispalmer #johnstotsenburg #almonbarber #companyafirstnebraska #philippineamericanwar #warjournal

Almon Barber Journal Series - Company A, First Nebraska from Spanish-American and Philippine-American Wars FIRST SHOT OF THE PHILIPPINE-AMERICAN WAR fired by William Grayson from First Nebraska Saturday February 4th 1899/Sunday February 5th 1899 At 8:15 this evening the first shot was fired on outpost number two by one of our Sentinels. The shot took effect, one insurgent down. The Filipinos tried to crowd our Sentinel back from post and refused to halt when ordered so he was shot dead. About 15 minutes later five shots were fired and then it wasn’t but a few moments later when the main firing commenced after the first five shots were fired. We were ordered to get ready as quick as possible which was done very shortly. We immediately moved out, taking our position which had been against us. Our position was about 40 roads to Northeast. On the highest point Company I to our left, fronting toward the filtering station. Our lines extended about 1 mile around camps. Our company was under command of Lieutenant Corcoran as Cap was officer this day. The attack was a general attack, the entire lines extending at least 10 miles around, our camp being about midway along the lines. The firing was steady along our line, first in one place and then another. We held our position at 8 in the morning. Company I advanced down the hill toward the bridge. Almon Barber Journal Series - Company A, First Nebraska from Spanish-American and Philippine-American Wars Friday, April 14th 1899 Nice morning. Feeling about the same. The Major Doctor came through our ward this morning and ordered me on special diet. We have four nurses in our ward, lady nurse in daytime and one man and two men at night. We receive good attention. Some of our boys brought to ward from front. Our lines will advance in the morning. This means our regiment is in for another fight, probably a hard one. Quite a number of the boys were transferred from the different wards and sent to Corregidor Island at Cavite. The 51st Iowa boys were relieved by the Pennsylvania boys at Malalos and then Iowa will proceed to Malalos and take a position on the line. Myself in quite a good deal of pain, mostly in back. #annabemispalmer #spanishamericanwar #philippineamericanwar #companyafirstnebraska #51stiowa #warjournal #almonbarber

Emilio Aguinaldo was a Filipino revolutionary leader, politician, and military general who played a vital role in the country's struggle for independence. He was born on March 22, 1869, in Cavite, Philippines. Aguinaldo is best known for leading the Philippine Revolution against Spanish colonial rule. He became the leader of the Katipunan movement, which fought for independence. Aguinaldo also proclaimed the Philippines' independence from Spain on June 12, 1898, and established the First Philippine Republic. However, his presidency faced challenges during the Philippine-American War, leading to his capture and eventual oath of allegiance to the United States. Despite controversies surrounding his actions, Emilio Aguinaldo remains an important figure in Philippine history for his contributions to the country's fight for freedom. He died on February 6, 1964, at the age of 94. #EmilioAguinaldo #PhilippineIndependence #PhilippineHistory #PhilippineRevolution #Katipunan #FirstPhilippineRepublic #FreedomFighter #PhilippineHero #FilipinoLeadership #PhilippineNationalism #PhilippineAmericanWar #PhilippinesIndependenceDay #FilipinoHistory #PhilippineSovereignty

The Philippine American War is documented as occurring from February 1899 to July 1902 - though there were several battles that continued even after the war’s declared end. The Filipino uprising against the US began following the signing of the Treaty of Paris - in which the U.S. Government purchased the Philippines for $20 million and ignored the Filipino people’s declaration of independence after over 300 years of Spanish rule. The war - which had historically (and inaccurately) been referred to as an insurrection - resulted in the death of up to 1 million Filipino civilians and the annexation of the Philippines for nearly 50 years. The U.S. government’s main purpose in colonizing the Philippines was because they believed the Filipinos could not govern themselves and that it was their responsibility to do so. #FAHM2023 #fanhs #fanhsnational #filipinoamericanhistorymonth #philippineamericanwar

David Fagen was born in Tampa, Florida in 1875. In 1898, he enlisted in the 24th Regiment of the US Army, one of only four black regiments at the time. In 1899, he is sent to the Philippines to serve in the Philippine-American War. Upon arrival, he is told by his commanding officers his regiment is going to kill “Niggers, black devils, and gugus.” On November 17th 1899, after receiving months racist treatment, Fagen defected to the Philippine Army. A bounty of $600, equivalent to $18,000 today, was put on Fagen for his defection. #DavidFagen #PhilippineAmericanWar #FilipinoAmericanHistoryMonth #FilipinoAmericanHistory #BlackFilipinoSolidarity #AfricanAmericanHistory #BlackHistory #FilipinoMartialArts #Eskrima #Serrada #Kali #Kombatan #Arnis #Panantukan #Suntukan #Dumog #Buno #Sikaran #YawYan #Abanico #Sinawali

🇵🇭🇺🇸 Let's delve into a complex chapter of #FilipinoAmericanHistory — the Treaty of Paris, signed in 1898. 📜 😕 On the darker side, the treaty led Spain to relinquish control of several colonies, including the Philippines, which the U.S. acquired for $20 million (around $545M today). This sparked the Philippine-American War, a devastating period for our homeland. 😀 However, the eventual end of the war in 1902 opened the door for a new era. The Philippine Organic Act was the beginning of greater autonomy and eventually, independence for the Philippines. 🇵🇭 ✨ As we commemorate Filipino American History Month, let's honor the resilience and triumphs of our ancestors who paved the way for our community’s vibrant contributions today. #SFFACC #SFFilAmChamber #TreatyOfParis #PhilippineAmericanWar #FilipinoAmericanHistoryMonth #FAHM 🇵🇭🇺🇸

OTD: September 28, about 122 years ago During the Philippine-American War The United States committed one of the most brutal war crime in history The Balangiga Massacre, where United States 9th Infantry Regiment, mostly veterans of the Boxer Rebellion massacred more than 2,000 - 2,500 Filipinos. Men and Children were executed while the women possibly r@ped As ordered from Brigadier General Jacob H Smith: "I want no prisoners. I wish you to kill and burn, the more you kill and burn the better it will please me. I want all persons killed who are capable of bearing arms in actual hostilities against the United States," General Jacob H. Smith said. Since it was a popular belief among the Americans serving in the Philippines that native males were born with bolos in their hands, Major Littleton "Tony" Waller asked, "I would like to know the limit of age to respect, sir." "Ten years", Smith said. "Persons of ten years and older are those designated as being capable of bearing arms?" "Yes." Smith confirmed his instructions a second time. The massacre was seen as a retaliation for a surprised attack by the Filipino Guerilla Forces in Balangiga, where 54 US soldiers were killed. #historymemes #history #philippineamericanwar #philippineamericanwarmeme #memes

The Moro people are a population of indigenous Muslims in the Philippines. The term came into use during the colonial period, when the Spaniards used the term Moros (Moors) to describe Muslim natives. The term Moro was a Spanish word used to refer to the Iberian Moors, the Muslims of Spain. When they arrived in the Philippines, they used the same word to refer to the Muslim natives of the islands, surprised and angered by a high Muslim presence after having defeated and expelled them from Spain. The Moro people are Austronesian groups, and are related to Malays, who are descended from southern tribes in China, mostly from Taiwan and Madagascar in Africa. Islam arrived in the Philippines in the late 14th century with Arab and Malay merchants following Southeast Asian trade networks. The American army, after defeating Spain in the Spanish-American War of 1898 started efforts to exert their control in the Moro regions. The Moro people resisted such colonization and fought back. This came to be known as the Moro Rebellion. On March 7, 1906, US troops under the command of Major General Leonard Wood massacred as many as 1,000 Filipino Muslims, who were taking refuge at Bud Dajo, a volcanic crater on the island of Jolo in the southern Philippines. #muslim #moros #filipino #islam #mororebellion #history #asianhistory #ushistory #colonization #philippineamericanwar

In the past couple months, I’ve tried to document any piece of my family’s histories to pass onto my daughter. It’s pretty cool to uncover legacies of public service of my ancestors. Unfortunately many records from my dad’s barrios/barangays were burnt down during the US invasion of the Philippines. In 1900, I’m finding out most of the Southeast region of Bohol was lit on fire because the US military was tracking down “insurrectos” aka “insurgents” fighting for their freedoms. My dad’s barrio of Langkis documented here was completely burned down. I can’t imagine what my ancestors been through during this time. How does one witness your entire community set aflame in the name of a “liberator” after fighting a revolution? In nearby Jagna town where I trace my great grandfather, Americans massacred over 400 Filipinos bc a fellow Filipino tipped them off. RIP to the unsung lives, to all families, to the fierce resistance, the water-tortured kababayan, to the revolutionaries lost during the Philippine-American war. #KnowHistoryKnowSelf #AmericanHistory #FilipinoHistory #Bohol #PhilippineAmericanWar #Imperialism #usa #duero #1900 #genealogy #history
