#gifted Review of @syndicatetheplay at @mktheatre by Breakfast on Broadway's Sarah-Jayne. We've all dreamed of winning the lottery, our life would be perfect and our problems would just melt away...right? Anything written by the late great Kay Mellor is bound to put you through a whole range of emotions, and this play is no different. As the money comes rolling in; drama, conflict and chaos come with it as our five 'lucky' lottery winners realise you can't pay off personal demons. Like its @bbc drama origins, you are invested in the characters from the opening line and only become more so as the show goes on. With a cast crammed full of the stars of your favourite soaps; Brooke Vincent, Samantha Giles, Gaynor Faye and William Ilkley, the cast keep up the intensity and pull you into every single one of their lives within the two hour show. So much so, that when the curtain fell, I was disappointed. There was so much more to find out. For someone making their stage debut, Oliver Anthony was spectacular as Jamie. A monologue of a confrontation with local baddy 'Boss Man' had me fixed to the stage, heart racing. He was so comfortable in this role, making you both love and hate the character as he develops. He certainly honoured the hard work of his Grandmother, and mother Gaynor Faye, by playing his part to perfection. Although I have to pick a star of the show, each member of The Syndicate cast deserve an accolade. Brooke shone as Amy whilst the comedic timing of Samantha injected comedy into an otherwise quite dark story. Gaynor herself is never centre stage, playing a PR consultant for the press around the winners. She directs the stage adaption of The Syndicate and, with a directorial debut as good as this, I can not wait to see what she does next. One final shout out to the Set designer Bretta Gerecke and Lighting Designer Jason Taylor. They made transitions between sets flawless with the use of simple strobe lighting and a simplistic set which worked seamlessly! It looked so easy, which means it definitely wasn't - well done! At the weekend Nay surprised me & Zy with tickets to see Aladdin! ⚽ Meet Lily Parr - women's football pioneer and LGBTQ+ icon Lily was seen as the star player of the Dick, Kerr Ladies. She started playing with the team at just 14 and by the end of her first season she had scored 43 goals. She had impressive fitness and football skills, and standing at 6ft tall she had an immensely powerful left foot that could 'kick like a mule'! Lily's dream of playing professionally ended when she was 16 when the F.A. banned women from playing football. Lily and her team played on despite the ban and in 1926 the team renamed to become Preston Ladies. Her football career spanned 32 years. ❤When not playing football, Lily was a qualified nurse in Preston. This is where she met her partner Mary. They were very open about their relationship. Lily passed away in 1978. She was able to see the F.A. overturn the ban of women's football in 1971. Parr's legacy lives on. She is one of the pioneers of women's football and an LGBTQ+ trailblazer. In 2002, she became the first woman to be inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame at the National Football Museum in Manchester. James started life in professional theatre in 1991. He originally trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in technical theatre before being a co-founder of his own theatre company which he jointly ran for 23 years. He has worked at many theatres and schools over the years and is currently a Production Manager and Tutor for Tring Park School of the Performing Arts. In other current work, he enjoys bringing history to life through his Mystery Tours in both Northampton and Aylesbury and working on projects such as this one. Isla and I were invited to see 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗻𝗲𝘆’𝘀 𝗔𝗹𝗮𝗱𝗱𝗶𝗻 at Milton Keynes Theatre on Thursday. It was every bit as magical as you can imagine… It’s the timeless story of Disney’s Aladdin, with the unforgettable 𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗴𝘀 and comedy and the actors just being the cartoon to life, perfectly! All the actors were all 𝗣𝗘𝗥𝗙𝗘𝗖𝗧! We actually looked at half time where they are all from as their accents were spot on. The singing was fabulous, I loved the new songs as well as the Disney classics that we all know and love. Iago is a human, not a bird, but the actor plays his voice so well. We laughed, danced and sang along throughout. Genie is absolutely 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲. It’s Yeukayi Usue (from Disney’s The Lion King). He is so funny, has the Genie charm and sings absolutely incredibly. Isla’s face lit up every time he came on screen! I want to tell you everything, but also I don’t want to spoil anything! There are 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗲𝘀 along the way (the scene changes are “wow”) and if you love the Disney classic just know you will absolutely love this show. If there’s one thing you do this year, please book to see 𝗔𝗹𝗮𝗱𝗱𝗶𝗻. Cluedo 2: The Next Chapter Milton Keynes Theatre 17/04/24 Really starting to love murder mystery plays now! This show was so good throughout and the laughs were well placed within. Jason Durr (Casualty) did a great job of playing Colonel Mustard, and Ellie Leach (Coronation Street) as Miss Scarlett! 🎭 Meet Shahnaz! Shahnaz is our Musical Director for 'Not A Game For Girls' at Stantonbury Theatre from 16th - 19th May. Shahnaz, also known as Shiny, has been a prominent figure in the arts scene of Milton Keynes for 50 years. Over this time she has demonstrated her versatility as a producer, director, composer, writer, and actor through numerous professional and community productions across various media such as TV, radio, and theatre. Shiny has collaborated with Rosemary for over 25 years on various projects for ‘The Play’s the Thing’, ‘Pepper’s Ghost, and Stantonbury Theatre. Primarily she trained as a classical pianist and has played keyboards and sung for various bands. She currently sings with the ’Living Archive’ Band A former Director of KiK Music she has worked with organisations from schools, young offenders, businesses and large organisations such as the MK Dons and MK Council. Her work includes Co-Musically Director Steven Sondheim’s ‘Assassins’, the creation of ‘The Milton Keynes City Community Choir’, ‘The MK Factor’, ‘The World Picnic’, Co-‘Musically Directing ’the ‘Opening of Stadium MK by H.M. The Queen’, The MK 40th Birthday Party and Gala at the MK Theatre’, and Co-Writer, Producer and Director of ‘PULSE’ a theatrical work expressed through music, choreography and multi-media which premiered at The MK Theatre.
