Kati Vilim, visual artist, was born in Budapest, Hungary, and works in New York City. An abstract painter, Vilim's non-referential paintings create an experience of a playful geometry, imbued with language and culture -- a mix of conceptual op-art and geometric abstraction. Her media range from traditional techniques as oil painting, to site -specific multimedia installation and digital animation. Kati Vilim earned her MFA from University of Fine Arts, Budapest, Hungary and Montclair State University, Montclair, NJ. It’s been an interesting experience and learning process to start a painting with a grisaille under painting. In the second photo of the series you can see the grisaille version and compare it with the finished colored one. When I started putting color on top of the grisaille I ended up making value changes anyway. I still was wrong in some places with judging value in the underpainting. I do think though that working first in grisaille made this work richer and more three dimensional looking compared to previous work in which I didn’t use this laborious method. Many people said I should leave the painting monochromatic, but I hope I’ve convinced these people that color did makes the work better. Also, compared to the previous grisaille stage the finished colored work looks more wild and alive in form. The hair is more loosely painted compared to its monochromatic version. In the previous stage the dog looked still somewhat holding back and composed, a bit tensed and rigid in its body, but luckily not anymore. It feels wild now and in motion. I’m working on practicing my drawing skills by translating old master paintings into drawings. I noticed my drawing skills were not so good anymore, and that stressed me out a bit. It’s apparently a skill that weaken if you don’t train it regular enough. After two drawings earlier this week that failed miserably, this one turned out pretty well. Today, I found myself at @manacontemporary for a studio visit with a group of amazing folks from @whitneymuseum. As I waited for everyone to arrive, I popped into the Dan Flavin exhibit! What a treat. While I love the minimalist maestros, I am no expert on Dan Flavin’s work. So, let me offer this from the website of @manacontemporary: Mana Contemporary presents Dan Flavin: cornered fluorescent light, a large-scale installation of works by the Minimalist master that fills the space of one of Mana’s galleries with radiant color. First shown at the Institute for the Arts at Rice University in Houston, Texas, in 1972, the works appear courtesy of the Estate of Dan Flavin. ______ Dan Flavin was born in 1933, in Jamaica, New York, and later studied at the Hans Hofmann School of Fine Arts, New School for Social Research, and Columbia University. His first solo exhibition was at the Judson Gallery, New York, in 1961; he made his first work with electric light that same year, and began using fluorescent tubes in 1963. The choice of material was motivated in part by a desire to break free from both Abstract Expressionism and Pop art by seizing on the anonymous and industrial nature of a familiar commercial product. Flavin worked with this self-imposed limitation for the rest of his career, producing endless combinations of light, color, and space in serial and systematic compositions. While outwardly simple and direct, these arrangements produce visual effects of surprising subtlety. He's kindly screening my new stop-motion animation from 4-5pm with some other artists. My recent works are based on cultural disparities. Being an immigrant of New York, I always compare my lifestyle, which I was living before in India. My research study's primary aim and objective are to investigate the effect of lifestyle changes between two cultures disparities. Due to many surprises, I felt great joy and struggle in adopting new lifestyles. However, I have always tried to define lifestyle through my creative artwork, keeping aside all the matters. I have always tried to convert all the unfavorable circumstances into possibilities and have accepted them as opportunities.'
