Frame and Backsplash for the Unimat So yesterday I made a custom granite base for my recently-purchased Emco Unimat SL1000/DB200 model engineer’s multi-machine. And today I thought it was looking a little “incomplete” somehow… So I made a frame with integrated clear plastic backsplash out of some black anodized 25mm 80/20 aluminum extrusion we had left over from another project. Now it’s starting to look “right” 😄 But I still need to figure out something for an angled lip at the bottom of the backsplash so chips etc. fall back onto the granite base instead of between the base and the backsplash. I could cut some angle brackets out of the remaining extrusion and fit another piece of plastic. Or tape a strip of whatever material I settle on for way covers between the base and backsplash? Or just leave it? Anyway, the extrusion will also allow me to add some 3D-printed modular organizing devices. So look out for that. The 80/20 came with some very nice flush-mounting clamping devices. (I’m sure there’s a name for these, I just don’t know what it is.) I had to counterbore some pockets for them in the mill. I also decided to mount the granite base by the proper three point method and made custom pads. I faced, turned, drilled, counterbored, chamfered and parted off three pieces of 416 stainless steel. Then I glued some rubber composite material to the tops of the pads. I installed these on top of two lengths of extrusion according to the spacing specified in the ASME granite surface plate standard: 1/5th to 1/4th of the length and width in from the sides. Progress on the motorcycle lifting table: The front wheel chock is finally ready, it’s made from welded steel, mechanism is made from stainless steel, Delrin, brass and bronze. The steel will get painted as well as the rest of the steel in a grey Polyurethane 2-component paint (Tikkurila Temadur 20) that was given to me by a friendly industrial painter😇 I made a pair of Delrin acetal glide blocks that steer the wheel locking plate when opening and closing the gap. There is 2 bearings in the part that is fastened to the moving steel plate, one bearing was not enough as the steel could get stuck when cranking it open. Granite Base for the Unimat I know you’re thinking: “This is too far. This is just too silly, Adam.” But hear me out! Yes, I did make a custom granite base for my recently-purchased Emco Unimat SL1000/DB200 model engineer’s multi-machine. And yes, it seems like overkill because even the manual says to just bolt this little toy to a piece of wood. And yes, mine already came with a very nice shop-made wooden travel case! But there’s a method to the madness. I have a pallet of old granite surface plates sitting around. They’re not flat enough to be used for inspection anymore. My plan was to relap them, but using them as machine bases is also a great second life. Granite is dimensionally and temperature stable. It also damps vibration. (Although, I admit this probably isn’t much of a factor on the Unimat since no matter what you do the tool is still basically mounted on guitar strings - carbide guitar strings in this case, but guitar strings nonetheless.) But most importantly the flat reference surface makes alignment tasks on the machine or on workpieces much easier! I probably don’t have to tell you that double cylinder motion control systems are prone to twisting… I measured the hole locations on the underside of the machine. Then I drilled four holes into the granite with a carbide end mill. (I use our old, dull multi-flute end mills for this. They’ll last about 10 holes.) I machined four stainless steel threaded inserts with grooves for mechanical interlocking. Then I glued them in place with Loctite 8 min metal-concrete epoxy. (I really like this stuff!) I think the result is spectacular! I even got myself a nice wooden workbench to mount it all on. Awwwww yeah! 🔬 I thought the @evident_ind STM7 measuring microscope couldn’t get any better, but now I wonder how I ever lived without the rotatable stage 😍 This thing is buttery smooth and makes part orientation super duper easy! We had a little extra money left at the end of the fiscal year and this is what I decided to purchase with it. Truth be told, we had been getting by without the rotatable stage because you can rotate the reference axis in the measurement software that comes with the microscope. But it’s much nicer to be able to do it manually, especially when you just want to do a quick check of a feature without firing up the computer. It’s a quality of life improvement for my summer course MACH 214 - Ultraprecision and Micromachining. What’s behind the curtain? 🧐 Well, nothing much… YET. But this is the beginning of a major upgrade to the shop. We’re finally acquiring the last puzzle piece for our ultraprecision metrology lab. We will now have a way to test for form accuracy on diamond turned optics! I don’t want to give too much away because we still have some work to do, but the thing that does the stuff is in the cardboard box in the pics 😉 The big story here is how our students helped us make this happen! Student Kevin C. helped us get this awesome butcher block table donated. Student Jesse P. helped us get the slick black 80/20 extrusion donated. Student Istvan C. donated the Newport optical breadboard. And student David P. (shown in the last pic) sewed a custom shroud out of blackout fabric. A new addition to the garage! A Winona Van Norman CB22XL Boring Bar. I didn’t know Van Norman made non-portable boring bars before coming across this one, I thought it was a Rottler. The boring head, fingers, and tooling seem to be the same as the older Rottlers. If anyone has any info or experience with this machine please contact me, I have questions. It doesn’t have a cradle fixture but I already sourced an aftermarket one. This thing is huge, if you have any Cummins or CAT engines that need boring, I’m your guy.
