We got lights!💡Even though I’ve had the Lisa for almost a year, I only just got an adapter for the electrical parts this week. I bought a few lamps second hand, and was super excited to see if the old wires were still working. The tiny outlet holes were dusty, rusty, and a part of the wire had snapped in two. I’m just filibustering until my little order comes in from @evan_designs_leds and I can start twisting flies’ legs together 😣 (wiring wee electrical lighting) I’m obsessed with making lamps and stuff and ultimately with lighting dollhouses the way Nature and the gods intended This is my fourth dollhouse that’ll be receiving my upgraded lighting treatment, and I’ve finally got the process dialed in. And the first houses suffered through some messy iterations: I wasted lots of time and effort pasting fairy lights and LED strips along walls and ceilings, which was unsightly no matter how much I tried to conceal them, and didn’t give me the naturalistic quality I craved. I tried some peel ‘n’ stick puck lights that folks in the community swore by as replacements for overhead fixtures. I played around with modern battery-operated lamps. I futzed with the built-in wiring in the Lundby dollhouses I have and discovered one of ‘em (my Stockholm) has unusable electric, and Lundby lamps are expensive and burn dimly anyway I switched over to from-scratch wiring, lamp manufacturing and bulb-fitting. It’s complicated but worth the effort. I can retrofit secondhand fixtures to take 3V wiring to keep my systems consistent, and leave the entire web of illumination *on* all the time. Every distinct activity I do in the world of dollhouses and miniatures has its own flavor. In the last three or four houses I’ve lived in—and in two of my dollhouses!—I’ve hung a mountain mural like this one. When I was growing up you’d see them at the places where their expense could be rationalized, often commercial or medical… for me, usually dentists’ and orthodontists’ offices. They weren’t easy technology back then I guess, though today there’s a…mountain of options out there at a… range (the puns! they just don’t stop!) of prices, and images that span the gamut from your classic landscapes to a giant blow-up photo of the family pet or your favorite rap artist The whimsy and magic of a wall like this was catnip to my spacey child self, and I grew to associate them with peaceful moments away from my sometimes turbulent life at home. And there’s that mountain-thing I’ve always had, informed by a romantic childhood assortment of influences from Heidi to John Denver and cemented by a teenage voyage to the Rockies in an RV captained by my grandfather. To make this mini, I could have just cut out a magazine photo of a landscape, which would have been easier and certainly provided a more crisp image resolution. But I crave that kitschy lo-fi look and I couldn’t resist replicating the image of Mt. Rainier from our current full size living room that I’d sourced with personal effort some years ago, so I went to the site where I bought the mural and copped their thumbnail image. I edited it for miniature room scale, and (as usual) increased saturation and contrast. I’ve found this is pretty basic default tweaking when printing my own miniature wall coverings, artwork, flooring, etc. as it all punches up the visual impact and makes for better fidelity at such tiny scale (I work mostly in 1:16) It’s just one of the themes I can’t help but introduce into my miniature homes and I tend to recreate my favorite artwork and wall coverings again and again. Printing this kind of thing at home is a big part of my miniature-making and I’m always on the lookout for good floors, especially at estate sales where you’ll find me taking multiple photos to capture magic in the form of iconic linoleum

My dollhouses let me peer into my childhood visions of what I hoped adulthood would look like, in a way I don’t (or can’t) quite indulge in my full size house Working on installing the electricity in this, my first dollhouse of adulthood (gifted to me last June), a Lundby Stockholm (and yes, these dollhouses do usually come wired for lights but mine was broken, plus I like aftermarket lighting better, please sponsor me @evan_designs_leds ha ha but no really) is a personal passion project that puts me into a pretty impenetrable flow state. I’m maniacally manufacturing lamps and twisting wires, stressing when the filaments are too tiny for my aged eyes while crouching for hours in front of wee rooms. Thanks yoga My first word was “light” and it was 1970 or so and my baby hand would’ve been pointing at lights that looked like the ones you see in these pictures, I guess. Also I was notorious, in childhood, for recognizing places by their fixtures: “okay Corbyn we’re going to the mall with the suspended glass globes” was the kind of thing that resonated, and I was told I had to be reminded to look forward and not ⬆️ up all the time None of this dollhouse lighting work can happen fast enough for my eager eyes but I know that slow is smooth, and smooth is fast. So I take calm care and I use the tools of my trade, gleaned from teachers like @margiecriner who taught me that tweezers and 1,2,3 blocks are musts. And what I’m left with always underwhelms casual observers but makes me shout with joy! Because what I had before was a desperate measure: an elaborate web of string lights, taped to the ceilings in a painstaking effort to both illuminate and stay hidden And I love fairy lights (in general) for their easy magic but when it comes to deployment in dollhouses I hate the chaos of all those little dots, and I don’t like how they take you out of the illusion. (I’ve seen people set them into recessed ceilings and I’d love to try my hand at a miniature version of old-school “acoustic tile” at some point but that time is not now.) I so wanted to cue up “Bloody Well Right” and that meandering piano solo that builds to wah-wah guitar but it’s not on the socials so
