Every stitch at Nature Alley tells a story of empowerment, craftsmanship and tradition. From the vibrant embroidery of Lambani artisans to the intricate Kasuti work by RAPID (an NGO that works with distressed women and trains them in skills that interest them and gives them livelihood opportunities) in Dharwad district, our brand celebrates the rich heritage of Karnataka. 💚 We mostly work with clusters in North Karnataka - Lambani tribal clusters, self-help groups in Thotadaguddahalli and Channapatna districts, and artisans from Gadag, Bijapur and Bellary districts. In these areas, their main source of income is agriculture which is dependent on the rains. So, they depend on this for six months of the year and resort to arts and handicrafts as their source of income for the rest of the year. 💪🏼 Kasuti is a cherished folk embroidery of Karnataka that traces its roots back to the 17th century. Originating in the skilled hands of Mysore Kingdom's women courtiers, Kasuti work is done by artisans in towns like Belgaum, Hubli, Bijapur, Dharwad, Kalghatgi, Gadag and Jamkhandi. Geometric patterns and architectural motifs are intertwined with temple inspirations. 💠🛕 Today, this timeless craft continues to thrive, with its unique technique requiring meticulous counting of warp and weft threads, ensuring symmetry without the need for tracing or outlining. Another unique feature of this embroidery is that the work looks the same on both sides - it's done without any knots. 🪡🧵 Lambani embroidery is practised by the Banjara tribe in Karnataka and Telangana. These artisans weave a tapestry of colour and texture through patchwork, beadwork, mirrorwork and intricate stitching. 14 types of stitches are used in Lambani embroidery. These stitches are done on geometric patterns like squares, rectangles, triangles and lines. The tribal women who do this embroidery wear colourful outfits - a skirt (phetiya) and blouse (kanchali), adorned with coins, shells, mirrors and buttons. ✨🫶🏼 Kowdhi is a traditional quilting technique practiced by the women of North Karnataka. With an aim to preserve the age-old traditional folk embroidery called Kasuti practised by Lambani women, philanthropist Asha Patil started Banjara Kasuti in 2017. The NGO outfit's efforts have empowered Lambani women, their families, and the cotton and khadi weavers of Vijayapura, while simultaneously reviving a critically endangered art form. Banganga, located at the Malabar Hill locality of Mumbai , is an ancient water tank that holds within its precincts not just history but a vibrant tapestry of culture and spirituality. Legend intertwines with reality as mythological tales narrate its creation by Lord Rama using an arrow! Surrounded by numerous temples, centuries-old steps, and serene shrines, Banganga exudes a different aura despite the urban cacophony. Excerpt: " It is believed that Lord Rama was asked to worship Shiva before he continued his journey towards Lanka. As he waited for his brother Lakshmana to get a potent lingam from Varanasi , he began to lose patience and created a lingam made of sand to start his prayer. Hence the place got its name from Valuka (which means sand) and Easwar – the name of Lord Shiva which results in the name Walkeshwar. The current lingam worshipped in the garbagriha of Walkeshwar Temple is said to be swayambhu (self-manifested). The lingam has a brass kavach (armor) and is protected within the coil of a brass Naga (serpent).
