Totems, terrazzo & travel: up and away. All good things must end, And so must IDS NZ tours. Apologies @jgread02 and Jenny: no time this time. 1. Sculpture outside the terminal. 2. Up Peter's drive: Last rise to the house, rising anticipation. @thebodarktree and I found Peter fossicking under this charming covered seating pavilion (1). Which doubles as a plant holding bay or store: with quute a few treasures awaiting planting out... 4. Dramatic drop from house rise to creek. Newly planted garden extension in between. 5. Iochroma sp., Solanaceae flowering away 6. Seed pods galore hanging elegantly under arching canes of kowhai ngutu kaka or kaka's beak (Clianthus puniceus, Leguminosae). Which is endemic to Hawkes Bay, and all but extinct in the wild. A plant saved by gardeners, in ex-situ cultivation. You'll just have to imagine its glorious carmine flowers, like a bush parrot's beak... 7. Apple of Sodom with its painted umbrella like leaves (Podophyllum peltatum cv, family is?, American). 8. Weeping / cascading cultivar of autumn camellia (C. sasanqua cv., Theaceae, Asia) 9, 10. Giant spikes of flowers rocketing out of neat fingery rosettes of leaves on Lobelia abedarica, Lobeliaceae, highland Africa. #internationaldendrologysociety #newzealandidsmembers2024tour #peterarthur #touchwoodbooks of old #hawkesbay #teikaomaui = #northisland #aoteoroa #newzealand #iochroma species Solanaceae #centralamerica #kowhaingutukaka #kakabeak #clianthuspuniceus Leguminosae Hawkes Bay #criticallyendangeredspecies #restrictedhabitat #habitatloss #feralanimalgrazing #appleifsodom #podophyllumpeltatum cv. #america #woodlandplants #autumncamellia #camelliasasanqua cv. I think this was one of my favourite Acer platanoides variations shown to us (on screen, as a specimen, and then out in their densely planted 'garden') by the Szmit Nursery on day 2 of the maple #idsstudydays - 'Paldiski', which I described as thready in my notes. #acerplatanoidespaldiski #internationaldendrologysociety #idspoland2024

The letter 'C' features: Dan & Monique's place, mooching around. 1. Caesalpinia sp. with bipinnate leaves and ŕeddish seed pods. Golden flowers. Leguminosae, tropical Asia (most). 2, 3. Chilean national bell flower (Lapageria rosea, Philesiaceae, Chile) in pink and white. 4. Diminutive ivy-leaved cyclamen (C. hederaecium, Primulaceae, Mediterranean basin) quietly carpeting the ground. 5, 6. Silver beech or tawhai (Lophozonia (syn. Nothofagus) menziesii, Fagaceae, both islands, endemic) gracefully soars over colour-coordinated washing (nice work!). 7. Triple trunk fusion into a kind of giant tripod or barstool. Elms (Ulmus?) Golly. 8. Colour-me-ginger indumentum undee evergreen or Southern magnolia leaves (M. grandiflora cv., Magnoliaceae, Sn. USA). 9. Not sure: a Libocedrus sp.? Might be kawaka or native cedar (L. plumosa, Cupressaceae, NZ endemic). 10. Columnar cypress oaks (Quercus robur 'Fastigiata', Fagaceae, garden origin) go straight up. An older and a younger one. Birds' eyes, beaks & trunk respect: A few finds & observations at Dan & Monique's place, rustling in shrubberies. 1, 2. Beach bird's eye (Alectryon coriaceus, Sapindaceae, hails from SE Australia's coastline, from CE New South Wales to CE Queensland). Shrub to small tree, related to NZ titoki / ash (A. excelsus). Our 1st Aussie. 3 - 5. Ripening kaki or persimmons catch birds' beady eyes faster than human ones. Note the nibbles and pecks, after sugars. Diospyros kaki cv., Ebenaceae, En. Asia. 6. More respect for felled tree stumps, which make jolly fertile seedbed nurseries, as we saw at Gwavas' bush and here, with kanuka (Kunzea ericifolia, Myrtaceae) trunks coming out of the soft, rotting 'potting mix' on offer inside an old stump. 7. Felled Turkey / Turkish oak stump (Quercus cerris, Fagaceae, Turkey, Iran) down but not out: vigorous basal shoots... 8, 9. Nibbled (possum?) but recovering flowers and new growth on manatu or ribbonwood (Plagianthus betulinus, Malvaceae, NZ): the only tree I saw on this tour. Semi-deciduous. Less decorative than houhere / lacebarks (Hoheria spp.) But a tough, quick, upright pioneer species, invaluable on river terraces, shingly soil. 10. Huge flowering couridjah or coastal honeysuckle (Banksia integrifolia, Proteaceae, SE Australian coastline from Melbourne to SE Queensland (Brisbane)). Golden flower 'cones' full of nectar had the local birds guzzling and gurgling, noisily. Our second Aussie. L'age d'or: Caracas to Cyprus Things golden and alluring catch the eyes of a mob of strolling dendrologists 1, 2. A large leaved Telanthiphira (was Senecio & some, Roldana) grandiflora from Central or South America (Caracas, Venezuela, for instance?), casually stuffed with large flattish flowerheads going hell for leather over a fence, fighting for light with... Mexican Bocconia pinnata (a giant poppy family plant with strìking bronzey or blue-grey leaves. Plus panicles of barely-there flowers that aren't the point. And a ti kouka / NZ cabbage tree for even more foliage interest and some sun competition. 3 - 8. The mob descend on it's thought New Zealand's only (well, certainly its largest) golden oak of Cyprus (Quercus alnifolia, Fagaceae, Cyprus) with furry undersides - some bright mustard yellow, others fawn, to grey. Kaikoura in Hastings: Delighted to stumble on this hefty patch of Marlborough rock daisies (Pachystegia insignis, Compositae, NE South Island (Kaikoura coast, Marlborough). Quietly flowering and setting seed alongside Dan Haliday's nursery area in Lindisfarne College. A favourite plant and still too rarely grown and known. In nature it hangs off rick faces, near the sea, clinging on to crevices. Pipes, parachutes, spines: Some pleasing oddities encountered, mooching around with @thebodarktree 1 - 5. Milky sapped climbing succulent Ceropegia sandersonii belongs to the same genus as Dutchman's pipe. Some are small trees, others, shrubs. In the milkweed family (Asclepidaceae). With wonderful parachute -meets-umbrella flower structure & camouflage / design to attract pollinators. 6. Christmas pride (Ruellia macrantha, Acanthaceae, Brazil), with large almost foxglove / Incarvillea-like trumpets. A new one to me in a largish genus of mostly smaller flowers. 7. A more elegant prickly, silver version of bears breeches (Acanthus mollis), this I think is A.spinosus. Acanthaceae family again, but from the Mediterranean basin. #internationaldendrologysociety #newzealandidsmembers2024tour #lindisfarnecollege #polyhouse #hastings #hawkesbay #teikaomaui = Maui's fish hook #northisland #newzealand #ceropegiasandersonii #asclepidaceae #succulents #climbers #parachutes #umbrellas #patterning #camouflage attracting pollinators #christmaspride #ruelliamacrantha #acanthaceae #brazil #trumpets #bearsbreeches #acanthusmollis #spinybearsbreeches #acanthusspinosus Acanthaceae #mediterraneanbasin #spinyplants spines #selfprotection

Velvety & sumptuous: Bananas, begonia-du-jour & beguilement. Plenty of visual distraction in Dan Haliday's poly-house at Lindisfarne College (big fun): 1, 3, 4. Pink velvet bananas (Musa velutina, Musaceae, NE India (Assam). Perennial herb to 3m. Fruit plum-sized, edible but with hard seeds, like Canna. More just for fun. 2. A favourite rare night-flowering cactus (Selenicereus (syn. Mainiera, Epiphyllum) chrysocardium, Cactaceae, C. America) has huge fishing rod arched branches, fleshy winged phyllodes (stems, not leaves) and large white trumpet flowers with gold boss, just for one glorious night. A true monster. 5 - 7. Gorgeous sandpaper, suede or velvet- like Begonia venosa, Begoniaceae, was discovered on an island in the mouth of the Santos River, Brazil, 1898 by Mr. Th. Christy, named and published by Joseph Hooker. Who needs flowers, with all this going on? 8. Caracasana, tropical smoke bush, Caribbean copper bush, smoke tree / Mexican shrubby spurge (Euphorbia cotinifolia ssp. cotinoides, Euphorbiaceae, C & S. America) can get 13 - 19m tall. Kaboom 9. More 'normal' banana flower bud scales and young fruit (Musa sp. Perhaps banana (M. acuminata), mealy b./plantain (M. balbisiana). Rather a delicious prospect. Both Musaceae, from: (M.a.) Tanzania, tropical & subtropical Asia; and (M.b.) Sikkim to Papuasia. Asian salads featuring sliced banana bud scales and lime juice are a practical use of these bits. Eucs, kahiks and wheki, i.e.: eucalypts (1, 2), kahikitea (3, 4) & wheki ponga (4, 5, 7)*, plus a few coastal redwoods (6+) rather take the breath away, with their dwarfing scale and stilling calm stature. * the observant will see a few slender trunked Cyathea sp. tree ferns, too... Holt Forest was well worth a diversion to see, and perhaps we could have stayed longer, and seen more. Quite a legacy. RHS Woody Plant Committee choice for Tree of the show Chelsea 2024. Chionanthus retusus. Delicate white scented flowers cover this plant creating a fringe effect and giving the plant its local name of Fringe Tree. It is always a pleasure to walk round the show gardens looking particularly at the trees chosen by designers. This year was no exception. If you had space for only one tree then this would be my choice. Alternatively a stand of several trees would be eye catching. I love the flowers but the leaves and general shape of the tree are elegant and in the autumn there is usually a good show of plum like fruit. #rhschelseaflowershow #rhschelsea2024 #internationaldendrologysociety

Boldo (Peumus boldus, Monimiaceae, C. Chile, esp. In mountain ranges). Shrub to 20m tall tree, dioecious, edible fruit, bark in tanning and dying, puckered leaves used medicinally and for making a tea (aiding digestion). Has alkaloids like boldine... 6. Burmese cherries & haws: Asia to Mexico in a pleasing climb... 1 - 7. Surpassing loveliness in pale rose pink (lilac, almost), seen as a haze from afar. Proved to be a grove of Burmese cherries in delicate blossom (Prunus cerasoides, Rosaceae, Wn. China, upper Burma). Hard to capture on film, against sharp blue sky. Plant hunter Frank Kingdom-Ward (of 'In search of the blue poppy' fame) introduced a form of this (P. c. var. rubea: rose pink, deeper in bud) to the UK in 1931. Both should be better known & grown, I suggest. 8. Climbing out of 'China' to a hilltop view from 'Mexico' (framed by long needled pines and oaks thence) east across Lake Tutira. A non-Mexican silver wattle (Acacia dealbata, Leguminosae, Oz) intruding on the view. 9, 10. Two loaded crab apples, of a species I'd not met & can scarcely find in books: Crataegus viridis. Fruit 2-3cm diameter: rich deep red. Simple glossy leaf, pointed tip. Origin? Presumably from Mexico, too. My first thought with such large fruit and dark, glossy, simple leaves was Lavalle's hybrid crab, C. x lavallei (or C. x l. 'Carrieri'), which is a cross of American C. crus-galli and Mexican C. stipulacea. Bees a buzzin', botanists a renamin'... As if these giant poached egg flowers weren't attraction enough, their pollen load is a bee magnet. It was bedlam in there! Now going by the less pretty name Polyspora longicarpa, I far prefer its older name, Gordonia longicarpa. It's in the tea family, Theaceae, with Camellia & Pyrenaria. Gordonia has been split off, now referring only to New World, i.e. American species, such as G. alatamaha (fmr. Franklinia) & G. lasianthus. Uh huh... I think taxonomists and DNA researchers publishing new plant names should first be made to study poetry, and word sounds. 'Polyspora' might mean many spores, which this might well have. But it sounds more like some industrial glue brand, to me. Ugh! And I assume Gordon was a plabt hunter of note In any case, beautiful flowers, a handsome upright firm & looks smart in a small grove. #guthriesmitharboretum #williamherbertguthriesmith #tutira #hawkesbay #teikaomaui = Maui's fish hook #northisland #aoteoroa #newzealand #internationaldendrologysociety #newzealandidsmembers2024tour #polysporalongicarpa #gordonialongicarpa #theaceae #asia #taxonomy #taxonomicrevsion #wingedseeds #oldworld #asia #gordonia #newworld #americas #pollen #bees #poachedeggs #grove #fastigiateform #upright

Carnelian in the carpark: Persimmon leaves & preamble. No fruit on this one (plenty seen, elsewhere on this tour) but glorious glowing carnelian orange & scarlet autumn colour (Diospyros kaki, Ebenaceae, Asia). Who needs fruit? Some history of Maori and paķeha (paleface: European) occupation & use of this district & land. Before & after William Herbert Guthrie-Smith came along. Among much else, he wrote a classic book, 'Tutira, the story of a New Zealand sheep station'. And since Guthrie-Smith, under a Trust's watch. Dawn redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides, in russet) and ahuahuete or Mexican swamp cypress (Taxodium muconatum, in lime green - gold) warming up their autumn cloaks before dropping. Legacy of William Herbert Guthrie-Smith, author, naturalist (here he is, with kereru / native pigeon on shoulder, (4)) and farmer... It's run as part bush & bird sanctuary, part multi-use arboretum, part environmental education centre, where schoolkids & groups can stay. In Poland to look at the trees but there were other wonderful things to see as well… so many churches as you might expect but this one was delightful. Krakow, to the south, is a beautiful part of Poland with the restored Czartoryski Museum crammed with fascinating subjects of interest. We had seen indigenous Convallaria major growing in the woods but good to see it so beautifully recorded (with Campanula persicifolia probably) in this painting from the 1500’s. There was also a small and very beautiful portrait of Carl Linnaeus. #idspoland2024 #internationaldendrologysocietymemberstour #internationaldendrologysociety

California, cherries, checkerboard (timber), caudate, canopy emergents (& alliteration) Farewell glances to Gwavas Station: so nice to have a long, slow, relaxed look at it. And there is plenty to take in, at that. Choice! 1, 3. Huge shelter belt of Monterey cypresses (Cupressus (syn. Hesperocyparis) macrocarpa, Cupressaceae, California) with trunk buttresseing or fluting evident. Succession planning for next generation shelterbelts, and of what, is a live issue considered, here. 2, 4 - 7. Flowering cherries (Prunus x serrulata cultivars, Rosaceae, garden origin) colouring up autumnally, with a lofty, mature Southern silky oak or silky oak (Grevillea robusta, Proteaceae, En. Australia) towering above. Silky oak timber is like rewarewa (Knightia excelsa, Proteaceae, NZ): pale cream, flecked with ginger spots or dashes, like some handsome pheasant's feathers, or a chequerboard. It was highly fashionable in Edwardian / Federation era (1880-1920) interiors. Panelling, furniture, objèts d'art. I recall in a former job assessing a string of customs houses and post offices through Queensland, lined with silky oak. Yum yum. 8, 9. Maple (Acer caudatifolium, Aceraceae). Not sure if this is a different species (can't find it in books) from A. caudatum (C. China, En. Himalayas, Nn. Burma). Lovely emerald bark, in any case... it seems A.caudatifolium is aka A.kawakami. 10. Puahunui Bush on Gwavas' skyline, punctuated by canopy emergent podocarps: huge old totara, matai and kahikitea. Rank over-excitement: Leading to slipshod identification (or none): 1 - 3. So taken with this silken bark was I, that I neglected to record what it was off (ouch). Never mind: isn't it luscious? 4. Fur, lobes & racemes: Delight after delight on view: all Chinese, noseying around paths in Gwavas Station arboretum. Thanks to active family travels and plant introductions over generations, there are plenty of plants new to me, growing here... 1 - 4. Magnolia kwangtungensis ((syn. M. / Manglietia moto), Magnoliaceae, Fujian, Guandong, Guangxi, Yunnan, Hunan: Sn., C. China) has richly ginger indumentum on stems, buds & under leaves. Who needs flowers, anyway? A tree to 20m, and withstands up to -18 degree frosts. 5. Fruit cage (keeping birds off) & glasshouse. One of a few. 6 - 7. Oddly lobed leaves of Pterostyrax psilophyllus ((syn. P. cavaleriei) 'Laveillei', Styracaceae, Wn. Guangxi, Guizhou, SW Hubei, En. Sichuan, NE Yunnan: China). Tree to 15m, rarest of the three cultivated most. 8. Long racemes on gooseberry relative, the shrub Itea ilicifolia (Grossulariaceae, C. China) introduced into the west by Augustine Henry, before 1895. 9, 10. I may have the spelling wrong, but the label said Heynea (syn. Trichilia) trijuga, Meliaceae, one of two species from India to S. China. Bark used medicinally. Rare holly, plums & raspberries Discoveries wandering the arboretum at Gwavas Station (no shortage, here)... 1, 2. Summer house / gazebo on stumps, moved while tree pruningwork is done, above its normal spot. Going back, after. 3 - 5. Large leaved holly (Ilex perado var. (/ssp.?) platyphylla, from the Laurisilva / laurel forests of the Canary Islands. Last seen in Nn. Tasmania (in Brickendon, near Longford's luscious shrubberies). 6, 7. Plum yew in abundant fruit (Cephalotaxus harringtoniana, Taxaceae, SE Asia / China). Not its more common fastigiate form, but looser, draping species. 8. Giant lilies going to seed (Cardiocrinum giganteum, Liliaceae, Himalayas). Yum yum. Yes, it's a weed in the Dandenongs, and likely Blue Mountains. Fine problem to have. 9. Edge of huge raspberry cage, and an enormous holly / holm / evergreen oak (Quercus ilex, Fagaceae, Mediterranean). White and red cultivars cropped for over 100 years here. We are in Poland, up by the Belarus border where we are walking in the beautiful ancient Bialowieza Forest. No bison were seen but instead wonderful veteran trees, plenty of interesting birds and an outstanding ground cover layer with two plants of many plants I know and love, Asarum europaeum and Mianthemum bifolium. It is a great pleasure to see these growing in the wild in dappled shade in this ancient forest. #internationaldendrologysocietymemberstour #internationaldendrologysociety #idspoland2024

Great neck & spine stretch exercise. 1, 2. jumbo leaved, red stemmed poplar (Populus jacquemontiana 'Glauca', Salicaceae, En. Himalayas) leaves bigger than hands, to 17cm. Bronze when young. 3 - 5. Scent, hair or bark? Too many rhododendrons / never enough? An apprenticeship with Duncan & Davies, then the largest export nursery in the Southern hemisphere, specialising in rhododendrons (rhodos = rose, dendron = tree: Greek) cured me of this genus, except if they are scented, hairy or have good bark. These two qualify for the last criterion, and the first is also creamily, richly scented... Gwavas along with Tregehan (Cornwall), have seen the Carylon family long dabbling with hybridising rhododendrons. It surprised me to see so many looking pretty spry even in long term, dry warm conditions, here... 1 - 8. Rhododendron nuttallii* x R.lindleyi^ with magnificent flaking papery bark, and 9 - 10. I couldn't find a label, but leaves like R. chrysomanicum (sulphur yellow blooms). *NE India, NW Yunnan, SE Tibet. Introduced to the west in 1850. 13cm or so trumpets, yellow /white, flushed yellow, highly scented Thomas Nuttall was a self-taught Yorkshire botanist fascinated with American flora, spending most of his life there, with one blip, during the US/UK wars. ^John Lindley, son of a Norwich nurseryman, worked for the Horticultural Society of London (later, Royal Hort. Soc.) as administrator, botanist, shows organiser, editor and head of examinations. And Professor of Botany at University College, London, & Chelsea Physic Garden. IDS plaque from a previous visit. Not their first time, here, but it certainly was mine... 9, 10. Oblong fruit of Chinese or false quince (Cydonia (syn. Protea & podocarp love-in: Details at forest floor of some lofty giants. 1, 2. Rewarewa or native honeysuckle tree (Knightia excelsa, Proteaceae, N. Island to Marlborough Sounds). Jeuvenile leaves to 30cm long, adult 10 - 15. One of only two NZ members of the Gondwanic Protea family. You'll just have to google its russet-crimson flowers, and imagine the speckled timber. 4. Under the giant old kahikitea or white pine I spied from afar, emerging from the canopy (Dacrycarpus (syn. Podocarpus) dacrydioides, Podocarpaceae). NZ's tallest tree (66.5m), it proved no good for ships' masts, as Captain Cook had hoped. Much milled for butter boxes, and farm clearances 5 - 7. Matai or black pine (Prumnopitys taxifolia, Podocarpaceae, N., S. & Stewart Islands). Its shingley, flaking plated bark is notable and beautiful, in its quiet way. 8 - 10. More mighty lowland totara or brown pine (Podocarpus totara, Podocarpaceae, N., S. & Stewart Islands). Maori war canoes and whare beams were made of this. Round the totara: never mind ragged rocks and rings of roses, dendrologists measuring totara girth get to it with rapid ease and focus... Podocarpus) dacrydioides, Podocarpaceae, lowland NZ), miles away from a swamp or creek bank. Clear indication of climate change, that what now is dry ridgeline was once moister - damp ground, and climate... Consider. 9, 10. Totara races off another tree, perhaps a tawa (Beilschmedia tawa): I didn't check. Or (noting its large leaves) a rewarewa (Knightia excelsa, Proteaceae). And we start to meet giant, ancient matai or black pine (Prumnopitys (syn. Podocarps) taxifolia, Podocarpaceae, C. N. Island & S. Island, NZ) well over 600 years old. A sign explains one, from c1375 seedling until it fell (2019), with a helpful timeline of parallel Western world events. Chaenomeles) cathayensis (syn. C. lagenaria var. wilsonii), Rosaceae, C. China has fierce thorns and ovoid to pointed, large fragrant fruit. Less sharply tasty than C. oblonga, but rather more ornamental. 2 - 6. Hot pink and apple blossom blush toned autumn camellias of significant height (8 - 10m tall) in full bloom (Camellia sasanqua, Theaceae, China). Quiet kaboom. 7, 8. Rare climber red wings or mariposa (Heteropterys (syn. Apotocarpus) angustifolia, Malpighiaceae, NW Argentina, S. Brazil, Pataguay) has small yellow flowers, then long lasting, ever reddening winged seeds (samaras). I've only seen it twice in Sydney (one at the botanic garden, no less) yet here it is on the side verandah of Gwavas, smouldering... No surprise really, as the Carlyon family are renowned woodland style gardeners, here (Gwavas is Cornish for 'your winter dwelling or permanent steading'... & at Tregehan, Cornwall, family home for some 500 years. Rhododendron hybrid breeding is a sport / lucrative pastime in both abodes / domains. And a lovely river stone and moss paved courtyard behind the homestead. Bareness & density: Of vegetation, that is. Spot the difference. & ponder the interconnected consequences. Quote for the day? (It's) 'As dry as a chip'* Journeying through lowland plains ravaged by cyclone-led flooding (postponing this tour thrice over 3 years) I was struck by the absolutely bare catchment hills: no bush, scant erosion control tree plantings, all but no regeneration planting. Little to slow any excess stormwater runoff, for instance. Recipe for trouble? I think so... Sharply contrasting are the 132 hectares of remnant (virgin) native bush (Puahanui Bush) on Gwavas Station. Possibly the most significant piece of dry lowland podocarp forest left in (largely cleared) New Zealand. Not milled, but retained, by the Carlyon and Hudson families (Major George Gwavas Carlyon took up this station in 1858. Who could afford to keep it. At peak, it was 30,000 acres. 3000 were left, in 2012, when sold to the Te Awahohonu Forest Trust. You can see this bush from afar, such is the contrast with bare, spare hills and paddocks And lucky us, going there. We got to tour house, garden, and bush. With such generous hosts. Perhaps pleased to meet other serious tree lovers. 6. Red oaks (Quercus rubra, Fagaceae, USA) line the lower drive). 8, 10. 1890 homestead. Built of totara / brown pine (Podocarpus totara, Podocarpaceae, milled on the property) 9. Big silky oak (Grevillea robusta, Proteaceae, Eastern Australia). & lovely tall Atlas cedar (Cedrus atlantica, Pinaceae, Morocco, Algeria) majestic beside the house. It's that time of year when the plant world springs into action. This sorbus alnifolia, also called alder-leafed whitebeam is in full showoff mode. #arboretum #dendrology #internationaldendrologysociety #kewgardens #treecollection #treesandshrubsonline #trees #spring

Zelkova in all its different forms together in Kew. 1. Zelkova serrata, Zelkova carpinifolia and Zelkova sonics in a row 2. Zelkova carpinifolia, from the Caucasus and much more seen in the UK than in Europe, probably due to historical connection between Iran and UK 3. Zelkova abelicea, natural occurring at Crete and an ancient remnant of this once widespread genus 4.Zelkova schneideriana with its remarkable bark #zelkova #zelkovaparvifolia #Zelkovaserrata #zelkovasinica #zelkovascheineideriana #zelkovaabelicea #dendrology #botanicalgarden #treesofinstagram #treenursery #baumschule #boomkwekerij #boomkwekerijebben #ebbentrees #ebbentreenursery #treeidentification #arboretum #landscapearchitecture #plantingdesign #landschaftsarchitektur #trees #idsdendrology #nederlandsedendrologischevereniging #internationaldendrologysociety #gardenarchitecture #gardendesign #gardens #tuinen #tuinarchitectuur

Wonderful Acer opalus @kewgardens with its bright yellow flowers was shining on this dull day. The yellow halo formed by the big flowers (for an acer), was remarkable from a huge distance! And very drought resistant as well, so great for a changing climate. #aceropalus #dendrology #botanicalgarden #treesofinstagram #treenursery #baumschule #boomkwekerij #boomkwekerijebben #ebbentrees #ebbentreenursery #treeidentification #arboretum #landscapearchitecture #plantingdesign #landschaftsarchitektur #trees #flowers #idsdendrology #nederlandsedendrologischevereniging #internationaldendrologysociety #gardenarchitecture #gardendesign #gardens #tuinen #tuinarchitectuur.

We've just published completely new text for Sequoia and Sequoiadendron on www.treesandshrubsonline.org! Written by Tom Christian @tchristian0187 it explores the ecology, natural history and horticultural stories of these magnificent Californian trees. Even if you think you know all about them we're sure you'll be surprised by new information. The amazing bark of Polylepis australis from Central Argentina. The bark looks like sheets of fila pastry flaking off the main trunk and branches. A beautiful small tree for the garden. What a remarkable #opusmagnum by Bernd Schulz. I treated myself just as winter is drawing to a close, typical! Leafing through it just shows how little one knows ..... Thank you @tony_kirkham_trees and #kewgardens for arranging the English edition.
