Another rewarding few days and nights on the river but the fishing was like cod fishing often is ….. challenging! The quality of fish made up for the lack of numbers but with 6 to 8 hours between bites it made for plenty of observation and reflexions in the magical river environment. Finished up with 3 quality river fish all in the 80s and one belter in the mid-90s that had a head like a beaten favourite. This fish’s head was way out of proportion to its body, like some character from an episode of Seinfeld. “Big Head” fell victim to one of my favourite swimbaits using an ultra-slow retrieve. Having experienced minimal interest through the night and early morning, it was something of a surprise to nail this big girl just after lunch on a still, cloudless day. Full confession time - when my alarm went off (at 3:45am – an hour or so before moon set) on the second morning, I reached up to feel the outside of my tent which was frozen solid. Several seconds passed as I pondered how warm and comfortable I was in my tent, how bitter it was outside, and how tough the preceding day and nights fishing had been. BUT I didn’t want to self-impose the title of “Sleeping Bag of Shame” with a sleep-in, so with some reservations I dragged myself out. Within minutes of commencing casting everything seemed “right” as I settled into another session searching for cod. It was good to get the boots dirty and stretch the legs on a multi-day trip just before the rain hit. We fished a section of the Murrumbidgee a bit closer to home than the recent weekend river drift further west. Although the river looked good, the constant SE winds made for a challenging bite. Covering plenty of pools and runs with casts, we finished with plenty of small fish. Spinnerbaits and weedless plastics accounting for most fish. Bit of a sea change the last week travelling 10 hours up to Narooma NSW, absolutely great scenery, and a great town highly recommend. Whilst up there fishing was the main priority, using a mixture of plastics from Westin Hypoteez from @jml_anglers_alliance to Fish Arrow 3" plastics.
