The piece features beaded borders and cornflower blue stripes, one side is adorned with a miniature of a lady in a white gown with gold embroidery, the lid inset with an oval beautifully hand painted miniature depicting Marie Antoinette (born Maria Antonia Josepha Joanna von Österreich-Lothringen; November 2, 1755 – October 16, 1793) was the queen of France, executed by guillotine during the French Revolution. She is most known for supposedly saying “Let them eat cake”, She was reviled by the French public for her lavish spending. Until her death, she supported the monarchy against reforms and against the French Revolution. The other side holds a locket of woven hair beneath a gold script monogram. Antique early-19th Century Exceptional Swiss 18k gold & enamel snuff box, of rectangular form with canted corners, the cover is set with a finely painted panel depicting a queen (possibly Dido Queen of Carthage), wearing a laurel crown in a sumptuous ermine cloak with a dagger in her hand. The story was probably written between 1587 and 1593, and was first published in 1594. The story focuses on the classical figure of Dido, the Queen of Carthage. It tells an intense dramatic tale of Dido and her fanatical love for Aeneas (induced by Cupid), Aeneas’ betrayal of her and her eventual suicide on his departure for Italy. The enamel plaque is within a leaf and frame, bottom decorated with translucent blue enamel over hexogon shaped engine-turning, the side with similar lozenge shaped enamel panels. Hallmarked with a makers mark for Rémond, Lamy & Cie, (active in Geneva, 1801-1804, very important Swiss goldsmiths), with later Russian and French import marks. Jean-Georges Rémond was born in France on July 27, 1752. Forced into exile by the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, his family took refuge in the German city of Hanau which soon became one of the largest production centers of goldsmithery in Europe in the second half of the 18th century. Presenting a museum worthy 19th Century French jewelled gold and enamel snuff box, exceptionally fine and very important, of shaped rectangular form, the lid applied with a royal crown above the cipher of Henry V de Bourbon, comte de Chambord (1820-1883), four fleur-de-lis, all set with rose-cut diamonds, blue enamel on a striped engine turned ground, the interior engraved: “Donné par Monsieur le / Comte de Chambord/ au Baron de Schwiter / 1855”. Henry d’Artois, comte de Chambord, is the last of the Bourbon line. In 1830 he was proclaimed King Henry V but his cousin, Louis-Philippe d’Orleans (1773-1850), refused to recognize him. A National Assembly decided in favour of d’Orleans who a week later was proclaimed King Louis-Philippe forcing Henry and his family into exile. The comte de Chambord continued his claim to the throne for the rest of his life, supported by a large group seeking the restoration of the Bourbons. A large equestrian portrait of Henri V was painted by the artist Baron Schwiter in 1854 and this was probably the reason for the presentation snuff box to be offered to the artist. Philippe Prutner Très belle boîte rectangulaire formant boîte à musique en or jaune décorée toutes faces. Le couvercle à charnière présentant une scène de genre « le Concert » d’après Valentin de Boulogne, dans un entourage de feuillages et coquilles, souligné en bordure d un filet bleu émaillé. Le fond à décor gravé et ciselé d’une lyre, cornes d’abondance et rinceaux sur fond amati. Les bords de la boite ciselés de rinceaux fleuris, feuillagés, coquilles et couple de cygnes, bec contre bec. L’intérieur laisse paraître une boîte à musique couverte d’une plaque en or guilloché figurant une jeune femme jouant de la lyre dans un paysage sur fond de motifs spiralés et un compartiment pouvant former tabatière. Une tirette inscrite dans le décor, dans angle droit de la boite à musique découvre le carré de remontage. Une gorge (avec une encoche) fixée dans le couvercle à l’aplomb de la séparation entre les deux compartiments. Un poussoir en façade. Epoque début XIXe, probablement HANAU par Souchay Colin et travail suisse pour le décor émaillé du couvercle. Avec une clé rapportée. Longueur : 8,9 cm, largeur : 6 cm, hauteur : 2,5 cm.
