May 19th marks #agenderprideday . Today, we promote awareness about #agender communities around the world and celebrate those who identify as agender . Agender persons typically do not identify as having a gender (genderless), however some consider their gender to be neutral. It is important to underline that gender is located on a spectrum and as such, there is diversity within agender identities; there is no “right” or “wrong” way of identifying as agender. Agender persons struggle with a myriad of myths, societal expectations and stereotypes which are imposed on them, including the normalization of the Western gender binary which stipulates that gender is categorized and embodied in only two distinct forms. This is a narrow and ignorant conception: many gender-expansive identities exist beyond and between the binary such as #agender, #genderqueer, #nonbinary and #genderfluid. Another myth agender persons face is that androgyny is obligatory and universal in the community. There is no single or exclusive gender expression among agender persons. Every gender identity and/or expression is personal and unique. Like #transgender, #nonbinary and #gendernonconforming people, #agender persons are also often assumed to have only recently come into existence due to trends. This could historically not be further from the truth. They have always existed and their presence has been well-documented for thousands of years, while gender identities outside the Western gender binary, with their own terms and roles, have a long and celebrated history among cultures across the globe. It is moreover presumed that agender persons cannot understand gender-based discrimination since they are genderless. On the contrary, having grown up in environments in which the gender binary is sponsored and reality is heavily gender-based, agender persons can provide unique perspectives on such matters. #agenderprideday is an important reminder to create inclusive and safe spaces for all genders. When I first told people I was expressing as femme, I was the recipient unsolicited warnings about the Queer community by people inside the CIStem. “They are vampires who will destroy u physical and spiritually.” “If you wear THAT someone is going to rape you.” “They are mentally ill and will pass it to you.” And that’s just what the CIS people who still talk to me said about the Queer community. My brother - my closest sibling - hasn’t talked to me in months. My sister has given me the silent treatment for 18 months. I have heard, through the grapevine that another family member found my photos and writing “disgusting.” Contrast those with my experience in the Queer community. I have been hugged or told that I’m beautiful by at least one queer person a day for months. When things got bad for me in a way that felt like an old trauma this week, it was a queer friend who dropped her life and struggles to listen to me awkwardly babble through my anger. Last night, a young Queer local icon paid my art the most beautiful compliment I have ever heard. Blood is thicker than water, my family of origin is fond of saying. “La famiglia e tutti.” I was told. The family’s everything. They were right. But not about the blood family. [TW. transphobia, bullying, DV] I'll say it again on this #IDAHOBIT, now the details have transpired & the danger is even more imminent: 'the new guidance for English schools re: trans kids is, unsurprisingly but still disappointingly, a transphobic piece of trash. very much related: earlier I came across an important article by @beninldn, featuring interviews with trans children who have been forced to quit school bc of horrifying bullying, absolutely aided & abetted by teachers. reading a Black non-binary kid say, "Why does the Prime Minister hate me?" brought tears of rage to my eyes. little Jude grew up in the '80/90's in Italy, which was even more queer/transphobic than it is now. As far as I remember, I questioned my gender as a child exactly once --- only to be condescendingly told "what a big imagination I had!" by the one adult I'd trusted. but then, my memories of school have more gaps than the ones in my abusive relationships. For reasons I couldn't name (= visible deviations from the norm, whether queer/neurodivergent), I was bullied from kindergarten to high school. middle school was particularly horrifying. One core memory is being chased around the classroom by two boys wielding set squares, while my teacher did absolutely nothing, and carried on with the lesson. In desperation, weak & uncoordinated little Jude threw a thick geometry book at one of the other boys' head. I missed, and ended up breaking the blinds with the force of my youthful pent-up rage & fear. Even that got very little reaction from the teacher. as an survivor of DV, I've been asked far too many times why I stayed with the worst of my abusive partners for 4yrs. Why at one point, I planned a family & kids with someone who consistently treated me so poorly. Now, there's many depressing intersecting answers to that (insensitive & inappropriate, always) question; this is one of them: if a child is routinely bullied for who they are and you (teacher/principal/caregiver of any sort) routinely do *absolutely nothing,* the lesson you're teaching the child is this: "you don't deserve to be protected / you aren't worth protecting." adults, do better.' #TransKidsDeserveToGrowUp
I’m reminded on this IDAHOBIT thst the ones who hurt you were they themselves wounded, often far beyond anything you can comprehend. This understanding does not excuse, it simply explains. It explains that it wasn’t you, it was a reflection of them. It explains that some of the ways life can be most unfair is when we are collateral damage to a storm we did not create, and yet, have been asked to weather.
