We’re delighted to present the next conversation in our Dialogues program, which brings together Sónia Almeida (@sonialmeida_a)—one of three artists on our 2023 Artist Prize Short List—and curator Margot Norton (@margotnorton). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “A painting is a thing in the world and we are, too. The thing that intrigued me the most when I went to museums as a child was looking at brushstrokes, even if they were not that juicy, and thinking about the fact that someone at some point in time was in front of this thing in a completely different space making it. I know it’s a weird way to relate to a painting, but rather than thinking about a painting’s construction, I always imagined the context of how it existed in the world, in another dimension almost.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Sónia Almeida is an artist whose paintings, artist books, and textile works mine non-verbal forms of communication, symbolism, and abstraction. By repeating a personal constellation of motifs to enact slippages in translation, she explores the ways in which shared cultural conditions and assimilation can splinter into plural realities, resulting in miscommunication and continuous efforts at interpretation. Almeida is represented by @simonesubalgallery and has exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally, including solo exhibitions hosted by @culturgest in Lisbon, Portugal (2023) and Simone Subal in New York (2012) (2014) (2016) (2019) (2021), among others. “The noun ‘organism’ has its roots in a Greek term for implements and tools, while likewise relating to the word ‘organisation.’ At some point, the organic came to represent a constructed and anachronistic understanding of the ‘natural world.’ Such a concept is leaky and insufficient today, as more and more we are intertwined with material waste and digital landscapes. “Bronte Stolz (@s_i_g_m_a_r_o_m_e_0) creates stark architectural forms that eliminate traces of the human, developing a sense that our bodies are now inextricably melded with industry,” writes guest curator Jared Davis (@jareddavisz) of the first of three artist picks from Foundwork’s community. “While many present-day sculptors produce anthropocenic plays on the body and our somatic presence, Stolz’s work seems to highlight the residual—the metal moulds, the grates, the foundations—only to leave the viewer feeling an uncanny sense of familiarity. Stolz’s forms highlight that we ourselves are made of no different stuff to the mineral waste of everyday life, but equally that this debris can readily continue without us.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Bronte Stolz is a visual artist operating predominantly within painting and sculpture. His work revolves around the semiotics of luxury, using discernible imagery from advertising. And so, a lot of that work [in “RASPBERRY BLOW,” 2022] was out of focus. After realizing this, sight and those temporary moments really became important to me. It was like I stopped caring about things needing to feel complete or fully realized or sharp, or having the nicest camera; it wasn’t about the technique or the process, it was more about the feeling and the release when I do end up creating something physical and tangible from what’s been flashing in my mind for some time.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Clifford Prince King is an artist living and working in New York and Los Angeles. King documents his intimate relationships in traditional, everyday settings that speak on his experiences as a queer Black man. In these instances, communion begins to morph into an offering of memory; it is how he honors and celebrates the reality of layered personhood. Within King’s images are nods to the beyond. Shared offerings to the past manifest in codes hidden in plain sight, known only to those who sit within a shared place of knowledge. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Se Young Au is an artist and writer based in Los Angeles. “I think my legacy is just documenting the people that I spend time with: dinners, picnics, friendships. I think Nan Goldin did that with her work. “Drawn in by Sze Wai Wong’s (@wong_sze_wai) distinctive palette and ephemeral tableaus, my appreciation for the work was furthered by the unique processes employed,” writes guest curator Alison Wong of her third artist pick. “Wong creates natural pigments from clay bodies found in the Dung Huang riverbed and uses ancient mural techniques to build faded yet rich layers that evoke a sense of reverence. Combining the old with the new, Wong invites the viewer in a liminal space that feels both familiar and otherworldly. She graduated from The Chinese University of Hong Kong with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and later a Master of Fine Arts. She went to Shangri-la to further her studies in 2016 and participated in an artist residency in Bulgaria in 2018. Wong’s work focuses on the relationship between memory and imagination. Various daily objects found locally—such as blue and white tarpaulin, discarded fences, bricks, and plastic chairs—are seen scattered around in the paintings. They represent the past of human activities as well as the passing of time. Inspired by ancient mural art and Western painting masters, Wong uses mineral pigments, clay, and other materials, adding onto the canvases layer by layer. The textures spawned from the dried clay magnify the paintings’ relationships with space and time that lead viewers to explore in a further dimension.
