'MORNING STROLL' - Wild Turkey (male) /Oil on prepared panel / 16" x 12" In the late 1980's I worked closely with the OFAH and the Ontario Provincial government in a program to reintroduce the Wild Turkey into the province. An exchange of Minnesota Wild Turkeys for Ontario Moose formed the heart of the project, as was a fun-raising effort to offset costs. To that end I created a painting called Ontario Homecoming which featured a flock of turkeys, and a limited edition of it was sold in support of the efforts to bring back a bird once native to this part of Canada. It was very exciting to be able to witness the release of the birds, and, as time went by, to also realize just how successful it turned out. The first one is the finished painting while the second is a short clip of the beginning stages of the big mass block in. The whole painting, 16x20 inches done using a direct method of painting, known as alla prima. This was a nice and sunny day, which made this painting session even more enjoyable 🤗 It rests now in a golden frame. I must say I do like it very much. So International Artist Magazine set a challenge to paint this bread… and what a challenge it was. A tricky one, make no mistake, and I think that it may have been too tricky for some as I haven’t seen many other entries for it, as they have to be posted on Instagram in order for it to be entered. I may be wrong, though. Anyway, this piece went through many changes and alterations before I was finally happy with it; at one point it looked like one of my loaves I bake at home… burnt! Then the crumb didn’t look right (yep, just like one of mine) - on and on it went but I persevered with it and got there in the end. And this is the result. I have to say, it does look better than anything I could bake. Think I’ll stick to painting 😊 . 'AVIAN MENAGERIE': /Limited Edition giclee / Mono-print 1/1 'Avian Menageries' was created in 2012 for a conservation fundraiser. At the time I was so busy with other projects that I just didn't have time to paint something new for the cause. An idea that I had been interested in seemed like an acceptable solution, and that was to create a digital mono print meaning one of a kind produced as a single giclee print (i.e 1/1). I began by painting a large background of a colour and tone that I felt would work with what I had in mind. This was photographed digitally and entered into a program on my computer. Using this as a base, I then dragged in portions from digital images of my paintings and stripped out their backgrounds, leaving each individual figure ready to arrange as I pleased. After quite some time trying out different compositions, I settled on one, and then paid attention to the many details and adjustments that would integrate each figure into the background until I was satisfied with it's appearance. This digital file was then used to create a hard copy in the form of a giclee print on canvas .... a one and only physical art object which I then signed and numbered 1/1. This became the feature offering at the auction, and the process was explained in detail so all would know precisely what they would be bidding on. Played a little with my painting from the first day of the workshop with Susan Lyon @lyonfineart at Real Academy of Art @realacademyofart. I enjoyed getting to experiment a little with no expectations of what the outcome will be. The lesson was playing with complimentary colors. I used permanent magenta and viridian. 'IN THE PINK' - male Cardinal /Oil on birch panel / 7.75" x 9.5" I worked with a very limited palette to produce this painting, just the three primary colours plus black and white. In addition, I took clues for treating the rest of the painting from the bird's colouration itself. The black of the cardinal's mask was used to create a strong presence by providing the deepest tones of the tree branch. Proof my work is not AI or Digital: I actually draw & work in messy materials. (who doesn’t love making a mess?!) Slide progression: 1. Transfer the drawing to canvas 2. Burnt umber & white underpainting 3. Background & blacks 4. Work the main focus area becaaauuuuuseeee…. 5. Secondary objects should be less sharp- it’s easier to make things less intense than it is to make things pop more (so 1st I got my pop on the face). The hands were only 3 colors, very limited details, so you don’t really pay attention to them but know they are hands. 6. Glaze & 2+ color layers 7. Finished painting. I work different for live painting. This is my method for very involved, long-term projects. This painting was huge & I knew I would need to work on it over several weeks, so this more regimented process fit.
