Produced in 2022, this mug was an extra unnumbered “safety casting” in case of breakage or loss when shipping the edition. It was never fired, and sat on a shelf for years. The edition is long since sold out, and the molds have been destroyed for the hornbill skulls. With that in mind, I wanted to not only do a special glaze for the mug, I also wanted to give it some bonus details. Since the casting was unfired, I was able to VERY carefully carve in additional detail to the beak and skull - something no other rhinoceros hornbill mug has! Let me tell you, wrapping up casting on an edition feels AMAZING - especially with a mug as tricky as the Lil’ Ammy! We’re a small studio, and @mrsvantiki and I like to get casting and seaming done by lunch so we can focus on other projects in the second half of the day. That means we can usually handle 10 mugs (12 if we really push it and they are simple to seam). Now, the Lil’ Ammy is a complex mug, and TWO molds are needed to make it. That means even though we were only casting 8 mugs a day, we were pouring, demolding, and seaming 16 molds. Originally meant for glaze testing, these mugs are from long closed editions whose molds have all been destroyed. The first set out of the kiln are these two Tiki Kon 2018 mugs! I sculpted these as an homage to the Coco Joe’s souvenir castings ubiquitous in Hawaii during the 60’ through the 80’s. I glazed them to match Coco Joe’s signature “made with genuine lava” look, and of course, added Swarovski Crystal eyes! Why green? Because olivine! I designed this mug as a loving homage to the classic Coco Joe’s “lava rock” souvenir pieces from Hawaii (the factory was a few towns over from where I grew up, in fact!). We managed to sneak 10 satin lava black pieces into the edition at the event, but I always wanted to do a few with red lava dripping out of the caldera. After bisque firing, the mug is dipped in black underglaze, This is also when we apply the black interior glaze Just so that if any drips out, it will get wiped away in the next step anyway. With a damn sponge, we wipe the dip away to accent he low features, this adds more depth. The final step is top clear coat. For this, we use an ultra-matte clear. Flowers aren't glossy, We wanted them to have a natural look and feel. This food safe clear coat brightens up the colors, and seals the surface. The final step is glaze firing. It is always an honor to design and create the event mug for @tikikon - especially with this years “Rim Of Fire” theme. I was born on Oahu, and lived in Hawaii for most of my life. Volcanoes and volcanic activity were something I thought everyone lived with when I was a child. This year’s mug, “The Caldera”, is perhaps more of a bowl than a mug. It is influenced by family vacations to Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island of Hawaii - specifically Halemaʻumaʻu Crater and the countless lava tubes we explored in the area. Lava tubes are incredible structures - underground arteries that pumped lava, and once the lava flowed into the sea the tube would be left behind. I would be mesmerized by the lap lines along the walls of the lava tubes left by the rising and falling of the lava as it passed through the very chamber I was standing in. Whew! Enough fancy inspiration/art talk - the big deal is, you can display this piece on the wall when you’re not drinking from it! How cool is that?! First day of casting the Giant Crab Claws! Since this is the first day, we only cast half of the production molds (10 of the 20 molds) to create 5 AP castings. The Giant Crabs of Mysterious Island have a fearsome reputation - I’m sure you’ve heard terrifying tales of the massive crustaceans, BUT… did you know that the juvenile claws make fantastic cocktail glasses? It’s true! Nothing tastes sweeter than a sip from the claw of a giant crab! This particular species is the Blue Devil Giant Crab, and it can be found crawling the shores of Mysterious Island. We’re coming to the end of our first solid week of glazing, and that means it’s time for a Lil’ Ammy mug update!! As you may have seen in our stories, the first kiln load of prehistoric cephalopods has already shipped, and further batches will be shipping out every week. You will get an email with tracking number when your critter is packed up for shipment. October 12th was the planned final ship date - but this teal glaze involves several more steps than the planned glaze that we scrapped due to crazing. This means we’ve had to push the final shipping date a tad to October 24. OMG I am SO glad it’s #alohafriday - @mrsvantiki and I did a big casting push this week to get the Lil’ Ammy Mug production going with a bang, and we are ready for a few days off! These mugs are extra tricky, as each is really 2 castings that need to be carefully seamed then joined together. We cast 8 ammonites a day, but that requires 16 castings (WAY more than our usual 10 casting maximum for a day). The first bisque firing will be Sunday, and glazing begins next week.
