A knife urn — also called a cutlery urn or knifebox — is an ornate wooden container used in the 18th and 19th centuries to store knives and spoons, and often seen flanking a serving table. The knife box became a symbol of importance in any early eighteenth-century dining room, since owning silver, like knives and spoons, was a matter of great prestige. The earliest recorded illustrations of knife boxes dates to 1649.
