MARS mixed media, acryl and inkjet on satin canvas, streched on wooden frame 87 x 110 cm 34" x 43" Guido Bernasconi spends long sessions in front of the television, wich has already been associated with temporary depressions: the artist becomes unhinged while is body becomes more and more amorphous. But when he is confronted with images, words and sentences that arise and challenge him repeatedly and agressively, he gets up and take his camera to immortalize them. These images then enter into the artist's mind, where he gradually associates them with words, replacing the voice with music represented by typographic shapes and colors. He then enriches the images with figures and structures from other sources, often repeated in different sizes, wich refer to the structural and systemic aspect. Guido Bernasconi's attention finally shifted to confronting the events apparently transmitted 1:1 live in news and television reports. Particulary thanks to the unconscious which plays the main role during this digestion process, the separation between the utopian and dystopian narratives of these formats can be both filled and understood. Bon anniversaire, Monsieur Bulatov - on view until October 28th (…) "As a young man, Bulatov realised that to become a true artist, he had to be independent of the state. Realising that he would not be able to adapt to the standards of the Soviet authorities, he gave up painting as a means of earning money. Erik began to work part-time illustrating books, while continuing his studies at the Surikov Institute. He worked mainly for Pioneer magazine. After graduating, following the advice of his friends, together with his fellow institute student and good friend the artist Oleg Vassiliev, he found a job at the "Malysh" publishing house, where they worked for over 30 years, from 1959 to 1989, together illustrating over 100 children's books. This way of earning a living was very common among unofficial artists who did not want to work according to the standards set by Soviet society. The clouds are rising, 2007 by Erik Bulatov, embodies the main principle of the artist's pictorial system - the synthesis of naturalistic form and text structures. Text and image double the visual effect. Bright, light clouds are transformed into dark, heavy clouds, and the words growing out of the depths, together with the moving atmospheric masses, create a tense dynamics of the composition. The similarities with pop artists such as Edward Ruscha, contemporaries of Bulatov, is sometimes felt. However, unlike them, rather than questioning the reality and limits of our own society, Erik Boulatov questions the social space as a whole. Born in Ekaterinburg in 1933, Erik Boulatov was a pioneer of contemporary art in Russia in the 1960s and 1970s, and one of the leaders of Soviet "unofficial" art.
