Cannes ‘58 is a killer hard-bop set from Donald Byrd-trumpet, Bobby Jaspar-tenor sax/flute, Walter Davis Jr.-piano, Doug Watkins-bass, and Art Taylor-drums. The sound on this mono recording from the 1958 Cannes Jazz Festival is excellent, and like the other Sam Records titles in my library, the pressing is fantastic. Art Taylor’s drums sound punchy and vibrant, and he pounds the hell out of them—Taylor wins the day! That said, everybody sounds stoked to be there, especially the audience. Their enthusiasm is a step beyond, generously offering a cacophony of raucous applause after every number. I’m enjoying this record a lot, and I made a note in my journal to put it toward the top of the stack when I invest in a mono cartridge with a new turntable later this year. It sounds terrific now, but I’m told that a mono cart makes mono recording playback a game-changer—I’m looking forward to testing that hypothesis! This title is widely available and inexpensive. If history is any guide, it will remain so until its sudden disappearance—combined with a lack of digital availability—drives the price on the secondary market into the ridiculous. In other words, if you’re a fan of these musicians or live hard-bop from this era, the ~$30US you’ll drop now is a pittance vs. what you’ll likely have to spend later. Guru - Jazzmatazz Volume 1 (1993) Finally found a nice clean original (UK) copy of this classic hip-hop meets jazz record by legendary rapper Keith Edward Elam, better known as Guru. While jazz rap wasn’t exactly a new thing in 1993 (Guru himself having already played a part in its early development as one half of the hip-hop duo Gang Starr), Jazzmatazz was still seen as somewhat groundbreaking for incorporating live instruments played by some of the biggest names in jazz. The most notable featured performers include Donald Byrd, who plays on the album’s standout track “Loungin’”, Lonnie Liston Smith, featured on both acoustic and electric piano on the excellent “Down The Backstreets”, and Roy Ayers, who lends his signature vibes to “Take A Look (At Yourself)”. Alguns selos (Blue Note; Speakers Corner; ECM; Analogue Productions…) funcionam como um íman, sobretudo porque são sinónimo de qualidade (sónica) e de boa música. A Impex Records é isso e mais. Tenho, no entanto, um pet peeve com este selo… os discos são caros pra caraças. E por isso tenho tão poucos. Mas todos os que tenho são absolutamente fantásticos. Sobre este Drum Suite de Blakey y sus compadres, bom, Blakey é um dos maiores bateristas de todos os tempos e isso nota-se (ele faz questão de que se note) em todos os discos dos Messengers. Drum Suite é o primeiro de uma série de discos em que o ensamble se foca numa linha mais percussionista de influência afro-jazz, mas isso é a história do lado A. Trumpeter Donald Byrd started out in the 1950s, attending the "hard bop university" of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, playing on many other milestone albums, and releasing fantastic records as a leader throughout the 1950s and 1960s, including Byrd in Hand, Free Form and A New Perspective. By the end of the 60s, he moved into the direction of electric jazz, following Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock, with an emphasis on jazz funk. Eventually, he would gain a PhD in music and teach at different universities. In the 1990s, he joined Gang Starr's Guru on his Jazzmatazz projects, mixing hip hop with jazz and funk. After all these explorations, he returned to more straight-foward jazz at an older age. But let's get back to that 1970s jazz-funk. Stepping Into Tomorrow was Byrd's 7th electric album, and his third with the famous Mizell Brothers, released in 1974. It's one of his most infectious albums in this style - hard grooves and -of course- another treasure trove of samples for hip hop beats. It's my favorite Byrd record from this era. Donald Byrd - Fuego (1960) All tracks composed by Byrd. The high that Byrd was on in the second half of the 1950s continues, supported by partner-in-crime Jackie McLean. Duke Pearson is joining instead of Walter Davis on the previous joint sessions. There is a clear difference in sound and personality I prefer the more boppish sound of Davis compared to the more soulful sound of Pearson. but Pearson is not bad by any standards. McLean actually outblows Byrd on quite a few tracks, so it doesn't come completely as a suprise that the partnership would come to an end soon after. Enjoying Sunday with this classic that never seems to get old. In fact, for me, in time it gets even better and better, as my listening prowess and apetite are constantly evolving. Recorded in 1963 and released in 1964, A New Perspective is a Donald Byrd album with spiritual-like original themes featuring four male and four female vocalists, perfectly blended with brilliant hard bop and soul jazz arrangements by Duke Pearson. The musicians are no less than stellar, with Herbie Hancock on piano, Hank Mobley on tenor sax, Kenny Burrell on guitar, Donald Best on vibraphone, Butch Warren on bass and Lex Humphries on drums. The music is perfectly played by everyone involved, especially Donald Byrd, who delivers his most soulful performances ever, but also Herbie Hancock, enriching the entire album's sound with his brilliant piano splashes, bringing a whole new perspective to gospel and spirituals. All tracks are favorites, from the dramatic opening of Elijah that turns into a soul jazz dancefloor killer, to the Beast of Burden which is one of the dopest jazz tracks ever, to the killer hard bop and post bop solos on Black Disciple and The Chant, and last but not least, the haunting Cristo Redentor by Duke Pearson, a deeply moving track that stays with you long after listening. I was only ten years old the first time i heard Cristo Redentor, while i was watching Robert De Niro's "A Bronx Tale" and it totally blew me to pieces. The tune still gives me the chills each time i watch that film, and i've seen it probably dozens of times. Years later when i got deeper into music and jazz i kept falling in love with this brilliant Pearson tune in literally all it's versions, and it's one of my favorites to this day.
