👁️ THE EYES HAVE IT… 👁️ My eye is a work of Art. Trouble is it’s Surrealist art! Salvador Dalí loved eyes so I thought I’d add my own surrealistic red masterpiece to this lineup of Dali eye paintings. I’m resting post surgery and despite the cruel headaches I think the eye is healing. 👁️ I actually met Salvador Dali in New York in 1976 when I was working for the British High Commission to the UN. I was a courier and ran the length and breadth of streets around the UN building delivering correspondence from the UK ambassador to other ambassadors. In those days there were no emails, and even phone calls were suspect because of widespread tapping. One day while running up Third Avenue to the French consulate, I saw Dali crossing the street toward me. He was with Gala his wife and a bodyguard. I doubled back and plucked up enough courage to speak to him. “Mr Dali, I’m going to buy one of your lithographs,“ I said. (In fact, I had been eyeing off a lithograph at an art gallery around the corner from the high commission. Dali lithographs back then were everywhere.) He stopped and said “Very good…what do you buy?” I told him it was a lithograph I’d seen of a knight with a lance on a horse. He said something like “ very good. You buy!“ and walked off. 👁️ I bought it and still have it. 👁️ I made a habit of carrying my Olympus camera with me whenever I was running around New York because you never knew what or who you’d see. I actually got a good shot of Dali (I used slide film) and some years later painted a portrait of him from that photograph. “YOU MUST UNLEARN WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNED” I always told workshops students PICASSO said that… But apparently it was YODA in Star Wars! Picasso SHOULD have said it. Anyway, it applies big time to the modern world of art. And there is no greater exponent of that principle than Picasso. (Now, before anyone complains I’m not resting while my retinal eye surgery heals, I assure you I prepared this post BEFORE I went under the knife in anticipation that I wouldn’t be getting much opportunity to post in such a wonderful place like Barcelona. I’m doing my best to recover – and in this case, my best is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!) So, before surgery I decided the only thing I needed to see this time in Barcelona was Picasso’s Museum. I saw it first in the late 70s. The real revelations were the paintings from Picasso’s early years (from age 14!). Have a look at the portraits of his father!!! His dad of course was a painter specialising in – of all things – pigeons! He made a living out of it so he wasn’t bad… But he was never famous and never satisfied. Some of that thirst for approbation must’ve rubbed off on Pablo. His father taught him all the RULES – figure drawing, still life, perspective, colours, composition, mediums etc….but Pablo would only become GREAT once he had learnt all these rules AND THEN BROKE EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM! 🤕 THANKS EVERYONE… 🤕 2 1/2 hour operation at Clinic Barcelona 8 hrs ago. Awake whole time. Could feel EVERYTHING (including tendons being cut, eyeball being lifted up to put scleral band around). Dr Zarranz says it was successful. Now depends on rest. 👁️ MORE EYE SURGERY 👁️ 🙏👨🎨 👁️ I’ll be searching for designer eye patches to wear after I have urgent surgery in Barcelona later today to restore the retina in my left eye. I rather like this crocheted one! 👁️ Unfortunately the eye surgery I had in Paris hasn’t worked so it’s once more under the blade. This trip is turning into a Hospital Tour of Europe. 👁️ So far, I expect my London exhibition will still be opening on May 25 and I still hope to get to the Perth workshop May 29-30 and the Bienarte workshop in Brisbane May 8-9 as well as the McGregor Winter School June 17-21. HOW COULD AN “INSANE ASYLUM” BE SO INSPIRING…? The answer is when it was the former “home” of Vincent van Gogh. His incarceration here at the monastery of Saint Paul des Mausole led to some of the most iconic paintings of all time, including ‘Starry Night’. So our workshop group on our visit the monastery felt truly inspired. I still can’t believe they let us paint in the grounds where Vincent tended Abell gardens and then some of his masterpieces. I could even use the hedges and ancient vines as a temporary easel and place for my paints. 🌻 FLOWER POWER… 🌻 We painted again today on the veranda of the yellow café that Vincent van Gogh made famous almost 150 years ago. We painted the veranda in the morning and then in the afternoon we chose the perfect Vincent still life – sunflowers… 🌻 When we were finished , we return them to the florist from whom I bought them. 👨 HOW MANY PEOPLE MY AGE GET TO TRAVEL WITH THEIR DAD…!? Dad arrived the other night in Arles, France, with partner Sue after travelling 36 hours and 17,000 km, but the view from their Hotel Forum room was worth the trip. It was Dad who taught me to paint almost 60 years ago. He had painted as a teenager and did some fine oils but gave that up when he began his career in journalism. It’s a great privilege to have him and wonderful Sue here in this beautiful ancient town surrounded by the spirit of Vincent Van Gogh and all the other artists who’ve found inspiration in these narrow 2000 year old streets. My Vincent workshops will be an annual event now occurring in the early part of May. 🖼️ I THINK WE’VE REALLY STARTED SOMETHING… 🖼️ The good people of Vincent Van Gogh’s Arles have taken these Aussie and American artists to their heart. 🖼️ Both the first and second groups of our workshop have been treated with great hospitality and approval. Tourist line up to see us paint and pose with us. 🖼️ So many Arlesians are saying things like “ Why don’t we get more artists coming to our town like you? We think what you’re doing is great.” 🖼️ Frankly I thought this place would be crawling with artists but apparently it’s a very rare thing. That’s why I’m determined to do this workshop again twice next year and then following years in the early weeks of May. 🖼️ One of my life’s motto is “if things worth doing, it’s worth being obsessed about.” And I’m getting obsessed about Arles and Vincent. 🖼️ WHAT’S THE AUSTRALIAN CONNECTION TO VINCENT VAN GOGH…? 🖼️ In fact after Vincent‘s brother Theo, probably the best friend Vincent had in the last years of his short life was an Australian artist by the name of John Peter Russell. Even most Australians haven’t heard of Russell. His portrait of Vincent is the closest likeness we have of Van Gogh. Even Vincent’s own self portraits were more caricatures than conventional portraits. (Russell was the better ‘conventional’ painter.) Vincent kept the portrait all his life and treasured it. 🖼️ I love this Australian connection. SPECIAL PRIVILEGE… What a special thing on my first day of Vincent van Gogh ‘immersion’. In the morning I got to visit the actual church in Auvers Sur Oise (1 hour drive north west of Paris) that was the subject of that haunting painting by Vincent. In the afternoon I got to see the famous painting itself at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris. I’m in Paris at the moment and soon in Arles for my Vincent workshop. 🩷 WELL, SOMEONE’S EMBRACED PINK…! 🩷 Well, really, it was the couple who commissioned this painting who chose pink peach trees blossoming in Japan as their subject. I was merely their means to a very pink end! They picked up the painting last night. Very chuffed. They appear in the painting off in the distance. 🩷 After I finish my European workshops and my show in London, I’ll be returning to Australia via Perth and doing two workshops – one on the west coast and one on the east coast in early June. RETIREMENT PRESENT… When Pam commissioned me to paint two paintings I didn’t realise they were her retirement present. She chose her favourite cities — Paris and New York. A PAINTING MADE TO FIT! This big beautiful painting by Ngipi Ward was DESTINED for this wall in the foyer at Youth Advocacy Centre, Brisbane. This is one of 15 paintings delivered to YAC. I can’t wait to see them ALL up. In the last couple of weeks, my team, (including assistant Niki Midgley) have delivered around 60 rent-free paintings from my collection to not-for-profits. More to follow next week…what a satisfying project! The painting “Kuluntjarra” 2010 is a salt lake created by two men (Wati Kutjarra Tjukurrpa) who were hunting and camping at Wanaritjarra, a small but deep rockhole nearby the lake. The two men found some mingkurrpa (native tobacco) which they chewed. It was strong and made them very sick, they started to sweat and then throw up. 📞 HOW A LOST PHONE BECOMES AN ARTISTIC OPPORTUNITY… 📞 The phone I lost last week has NOT been returned….HOWEVER it’s not all bad news. If I hadn’t gone to that function where my phone was picked up, these (and many other) paintings would not now be finding their way to SIX not for profit organisations in Brisbane. Since last Tuesday, organisations like Anglicare, Youth Advocacy Centre, Communify and others have contacted me and I’ve been only too pleased to assemble more than 50 paintings for their foyers etc. As for the person who took my phone, shame on you.
