We are pleased to present Donna Lougher’s new exhibition of installation, paintings, and sculpture; Systemic Constellations at Colville Gallery OPENING Tuesday 14 May 5:30pm, showing until 7 June 2024 Full catalogue available online “The title Symbolic Constellations encapsulates the idea of various elements coming together to form a meaningful whole, much like stars in a constellation. The objects or concepts can be associated with symbolism in various contexts and cultures. During an artist residency in Mexico City 2023, I discovered a rich cultural heritage filled with symbolism from ancient civilizations, indigenous beliefs and traditions, through colonial influences, contemporary art, and in literature and architecture. Symbolic Constellations and its relationship to Mexico, can also correlate to living in lutruwita Tasmania, once attached to North America in a supercontinent called Nuña. A mass of land which preceded the Gondwana formation. Tasmania has its own unique symbolic meanings embedded within the local landscape, indigenous culture, and historical heritage. The constellation of symbols ranges from the natural wonders of rugged terrain, unique wildlife, cultural heritage, aboriginal communities, and colonial history. The earth-inspired colours and materials in the sculptures and paintings, highlight their connection to the natural world, and evoke a sense of the raw, textured beauty of the materials. A combination of traditional and contemporary media conveys mood, texture, and depth, including the use of synthetics, which relate to environmental concerns. LED and lights, introduce an interactive and dynamic element to the work, while scale and perspective suggest a multidimensional approach to create engaging and thought provoking works of art.” - Donna Lougher “Sure, the picture is in my eye, but I am also the picture”. Slavoj Zizek, The Parallax View

Colville Gallery is pleased to present Leanne Halls’ Just Light exhibition, as Leanne takes us on a journey of our Tasmanian beaches, vistas, and intimate studies of summer floral bounty. Her time in Japan studying with a master, particularly enhanced her skills and techniques, acknowledging simplicity, the spaces created within a work, and not least, luminosity.

Dropped off my paintings @colvillegallery yesterday in preparation for my exhibition opening next week Tuesday @ 5:30pm. Can't wait to see them all hung. Huge hugs to my framer for doing an amazing framing job. They look absolutely amazing. I always say a painting doesn't look finished until it is beautifully framed. And these paintings are no exception. Early preview of paintings can be seen from Thursday 28th March 2024. #leannehalls #leannehalls_artist #colvillegallery #stilllifepaintings #landscapepaintings #oilpaintings #tasmanianlandscapes #milkfactorygallery

Ian Parry's exhibition 'new works' continues until the 31st of July. “These paintings continue to look at water and sky, the intangible and shifting elements. They are painted in the southern most region of Tasmania which is more an event than a landscape, a silent movie free of the chattering of humanity.” Ian Parry Gallery open 9:30-5:30 Monday to Saturday #colvillegallery #ianparry #tasmania #tasmanianart #tasmanianlandscape #tasmanianseascape #oilpainting #contemporaryart #contemporarypainting #tasmanianartist

Ian Parry’s art is an incisive complication of the term ‘abstract’. While the Tasmanian artist has described his approach as such—clearly seen through his use of amorphous shapes, swelling patterns and juxtaposition of colour—Parry’s paintings are foremost an interpretation of the environment. “These paintings continue to look at water and sky, the intangible and shifting elements,” says Parry of his latest exhibition at Colville Gallery. “They are painted in the southernmost region of Tasmania, which is more an event than a landscape—a silent movie free of the chattering of humanity.” Parry sees his work in a tradition of “silent paintings”, citing the influence of Australian artists Clarice Beckett and David Davies, as well as French artist Jean-Francois Millet and German artist Caspar David Friedrich. “I do not work en plein air—more by the absorption method; these roamings supply my visual diet with at least a tonal naturalism.” . ‘New Works’ is at Colville Gallery until July 31. Paul Gundry’s landscapes hover close to the ground, capturing the light, atmospherics, and the imaginary qualities available within the Tasmanian landscape. His focus, as he explains, is to conjure “a dialogue between the individual and the place”—and this is apparent in his latest exhibition, ‘Meditations’. Gundry’s well-known landscapes and seascapes are usually painted in one sitting. “I was looking for something transcendent, not in a spectacular way but in a quiet and unassuming, calm, peaceful sort of way,” he says. “I’m looking for a felt presence, in the way that the environment and the elements assemble and present themselves. They might feel a little bit exalted or like a nirvana, slightly elevated, that's not necessarily site-specific.” . CURRENT EXHIBTION: TONY WOODS Woods was a Tasmanian artist who gained early recognition through exhibitions at Australian galleries and in 1968 was awarded the Harkness Fellowship which took him to New York where he worked alongside Brett Whiteley. One of Australia's early Pop artists, Woods experimented with line, form and colour. His abstractions of light panels and bars established a unique and highly recognisable set of motifs. Images: 1. I recently went back to review a painting that I painted last year of Arthur River Tasmania. While I don't think the original painting was bad I felt it didn't have a lot of impact. By using atmospheric perspective and greater tonal contrast the impact of the painting improved.
