Wari mummy bundle head from Peru. It was created with multiple elements such as woven cotton textiles, camelid wool, feathers, human hair and copper. “ In ancient Peruvian religious thought, the dead inhabited the realm of the living, their spirits and preserved bodies nourishing future generations. Deceased ancestors were preserved in order to take part in ongoing ritual life. The Wari, for example, formed mummy bundles with the bodies of elites. Individuals were placed in a seated position, wrapped in numerous layers of cloth, and dressed in elaborate textiles. Mummy bundles were then topped with false heads, such as the mask seen here. The feather mask’s open eyes, brightly colored face, and realistic hair communicate the living essence of the deceased person it covered.” Middle Horizon Period 650AD - 1000 Ex Billy Jamieson #antiquities #precolumbian #peru #peruvian #huari #wari #chimu #moche #mochica #chancaymummy #chancay #perumummies #archeology #mummymask #bundlemummies #mummy #mummies #textiles #ancienttextile #ancientmask #coppermask #cotton #camelid #wool #hair #braids #feathers #funeral #funerary

Pre-Columbian Huari (Wari) from the central coast of Peru. This carved wooden false mummy head mask is embellished with a thick layer of cinnabar lacquer. The visage presents with a high relief pronounced nose, incised large almond shaped eyes, and slightly parted lips and a high integral headdress or coiffure. Wood shows wonderful evidence of its age. A mask or false head was ritualistically placed over the mummy bundle. For the people of the Andes, death was not the end of life. It marked the transition into a new existence in the underworld. This transition was ensured through funerary rites and the careful preparation of the funerary bundle and tomb, so that society’s leaders could be transformed into ancestors. 800 - 1300AD #antiquities #precolumbian #peru #peruvian #huari #wari #chancaymummy #chancay #perumummies #mummymask #bundlemummies #deceased #mummy #mummies #textiles #ancienttextiles
