I’m at a residency in Puerto Vallarta working on a book about my life and art. It is very difficult because writing is outside my comfort zone. But I get it done by setting an alarm for two hours. Sometimes it’s a real slog, other times I’m surprised writing time is over. I also am making a small drawing every day. This is also uncomfortable but I’m hoping it leeds somewhere. I brought my staple gun but I’m not inspired to make sculpture. Maybe if I come across an extraordinary box. It’s great to have others working around me in this big house and we’ve had some great conversations over dinner. It’s so great to have new routines. People are so warm and friendly and my Spanish is improving. This small sculpture is called Stand By Me after that beautiful, haunting song written and sung by Ben E King in 1961. The sculpture is a tribute to the myriad of people who have supported and stood by me through my very long path. One of the lovely things about instagram is all the comments I receive. Felt like I couldn’t do this till I had something else to bounce off of. Sometimes collaboration just works. I spend about 2 hours writing, actually setting a timer, take a break for lunch and conversation, then do the drawings till dinner time. It’s so nice to break out of old routines and start new ones. Artist residencies allow the time for this. Plus I love having so many people around. Back in the studio working on a new piece. I was gone for a month at an artist residency in Mexico. Before I left I cut out shapes for a new piece so I knew where to start when I returned. I learned from Hemingway, the writer, that he never finished a chapter at the end of his work day, but left just enough hanging so he knew where to start the next day. I experienced culture shock after my time away from the studio but still showed up everyday. It helped that I had this new piece to get me motivated to get back into my work routine. It was my great pleasure to fly to Bozeman to attend a solo exhibition Opening celebration for my dear friend ccourtenaye It’s a knockout of a painting show at Echo Arts workwithecho We all know how good it feels when people come to our own events. And in Los Angeles it can almost feel like you’re flying to Bozeman to get there, but I’m telling you how important it is to support our friends. It’s so much work to put a show together and so worthwhile to celebrate with each other. I did not know anyone but a I got a good compliment on my dress and “there were a lot of pretty people there” like jonimitchell says. This small sculpture is called Stand By Me after that beautiful, haunting song written and sung by Ben E King in 1961. The sculpture is a tribute to the myriad of people who have supported and stood by me through my very long path. One of the lovely things about instagram is all the comments I receive. About two weeks ago I decided to go on strike. I have so much work in the studio and in storage. I told myself that I wasn’t going to make anymore work until I sold something. Sales of larger work are few and far between. It doesn’t matter if you live in a major metropolitan art hub or have 59K followers. My artwork has never supported me. I have always taken care of it, it has never taken care of me. By this I mean I have always had a part time job, no rich husband, no trust fund. A real estate sale has given me some stability but mostly its living within my means and being resourceful. All artists struggle with this issue of storage. I commit to making art for 3-4 hours a day M-F. But all of a sudden I felt overwhelmed by the quantity of it. Thus the strike. Well listen to this, and this is another aspect of the artists life; serendipitously, out of nowhere comes a sale from one of my beloved followers on Instagram of a large wall sculpture called Inside Out. There is a God and what a wonderful indication for me to call off the strike and go back into the studio. Working on a large piece is fun. It goes pretty fast because when the shape is simple the process is very straightforward. Making the openings is more challenging but I’ve done this before and it keeps me on my toes. My hands know what to do. This sculpture will have three components and be about 14 feet tall. I’m creating it for my upcoming exhibition wonzimer gallery in November. Stay tuned. Last week I found 3 misplaced drawing tucked in an old sketchbook. Tucking is something I do when moving to keep tiny works flat and protected by sizable pages and hard covers. This past week I went in my supply cupboard for a pad of drawing paper, to check size and how much was available. There I found a stash of small pads I forgot about, the type used for my EFFICACIES series. In 3 of the 5 pads I found drawings from 2017 which I had no memory of. When we digitized the EFFICACIES after moving to our current abode and studio in 2018, we worked with the 30 that were packed together in chronology, never thinking to check the pads from which they came. On the left here, a completed tour de force from the series. On the right a work that was in progress I finished the day after it was discovered. The third is a sweet fragment, two disparate graphic thoughts coexisting and connecting…. Likely to be left artifactually for the inherent eloquence. Saving it for another post. Moving is hard. There are losses happening, even as the new blessings unfold. Rare it is to discover lost treasure like this. 2023 became the year of the frame, my studio time focused of converting portfolios of loose works on paper into gallery-ready finished pieces. But framing for me was not a drop off, with payment at pick up. It was an opportunity to reenter the energy of works for guidance on what they needed to be happily paired with existing frames in my stash. It was, at times, remarkable to discover sizes and styles that worked as if custom ordered. And it was equally gratifying to rework frames to arrive at that same feeling of perfect fit. My French Matting skills proved essential, hand painted details bringing the sweet satisfaction of a well integrated completion. The degree to which I extended the UnPreMeditation image with additional unpremeditated inclusions in the framing process posed a challenge in presenting the work. While the drawing is primary, the hand coloring brought a new dimension. Improvisations within the framing, however, brought home new levels of multidimensionality. Consequently, @ernestburden designed a website upgrade to present each portfolio image with its completed state so the transformational nature of my framing as aesthetic intervention can be enjoyed. As always, the lightning strike of inspiration coupled with the make-it-happen of Ernest’s technical support makes for great alchemical magic. Use the link in my bio to take a look. The first of three sections for this sculpture is done. You can see in this video how I finished it. There is a small opening where I insert the final piece of cardboard. The hole is functional but also pays homage to my pottery background. There is a tribe of Native Americans in the southwest who created Mimbres pottery from 750-1150 AD. During burial ceremonies a hole was made in a beautifully painted bowl. It was thought to be so the spirit can leave the body. I’ve got a handmade sign on a cardboard box to welcome curator, Johnny Sampson johnnysampsonprojects as he got off the Catalina Island Ferry boat landing in San Pedro. We’re planning a solo exhibition at Catalina Museum for Art and History catalinamuseum in 2024. He’s been on my radar for about 5 years when I met him at my studio liquidation sale in Emeryville in 2017 when I decided to make my move to Los Angeles permanent, and he acquired a sculpture. I kept in touch with him through my newsletter and sent him postcards and other material. I didn’t hear a peep until he emailed me for a studio visit. It’s a great example of being persistent and thinking about the long haul. Things happen when the stars align and not a minute earlier.
