Walkaround video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6Pf2jm7R7c&t=3s Production of the M4A1 tank began in February 1942 after the British placed an order, it would have had a cast nose, turret and a one-piece cast hull, with a 75mm cannon. The A1 was manufactured by Lima Locomotive Works. These tanks were designed on British specs and were fitted with the Continental R-975 air-cooled radial engine. The M4A1 would be replaced on December 1943, by the M4A1(76)w, which received a more recent 76 mm M1 main gun. Some of the M4A1 tanks would be the base of the special attachment dozerblade. British variants formed part of the group of specialized vehicles collectively known as "Hobart's Funnies". I must confess, the world of dieting is a bit like a roller coaster ride in the dark. You never quite know which turn is coming next. It’s a balancing act between the mind and body, or as I like to call it, the Battle of the Bulge, the War of the Waistline, the Tug of War of the Tummy; you get the gist. Now, let’s consider physically dieting. This is a straightforward, no-nonsense approach to weight loss. You count your calories, you reduce your portions, you sweat it out at the gym, and voila! Battle of the Bluge 1944 "Hitler's last Gamble" The Battle of the Bulge was Hitler's final throw of the dice. With Germany in retreat across all fronts and a worsening situation at home, Hitler hoped to force the Western Allies out of the war before turning his full attention to the Soviet Union. Just as they had done in 1940, German tanks were to smash through Allied lines in the Ardennes forest and head for the coast, in this case, the vital Allied port of Antwerp. Germany amassed over 300,000 men, 2,100 tanks and assault guns, and around 1,900 artillery pieces for an attack on just 80,000 unprepared American soldiers. But it wasn't 1940 anymore and the circumstances surrounding this attack were completely different. Even the men who planned the offensive didn't believe it would work. To succeed it required complete surprise, poor weather, a rapid advance. Dogged American resistance slowed up the German advance allowing Allied reinforcements to flow in. Though there were only 80,000 Allied troops in the Ardennes at the start of the battle, there were over 500,000 by Christmas Eve. By then the poor weather had started to clear and the Allies were able to play their trump card, destroying the German forces from the air. German forces did create a bulge in the Allied line, from which the battle gets its name, but by the end of January that bulge was closed. In the end, the Ardennes Offensive shorted the war and essentially ended Germany’s ability to resist both in both the east and west. When the Soviets launched their winter offensive in January, they swept aside German resistance and advance 300 miles closer to Germany in a matter of weeks. Two months later, the Allies would do the same crossing the Rhine into Germany itself. The gun pictured here, this is one of the 406 mm guns of Batterie Lindemann near Calais, France. This model of gun was originally designed and built by Krupp for the H-class of battleships that were meant to compliment the Bismarck and Tirpitz. They were going to be enormous. The battleships never came to fruition, so the guns were installed in batteries in France and Norway. My paternal great-uncle, Jesse E. McGowan, was killed in the Second World War on the first night of what became known as the Battle of the Bulge. He was nineteen at the time, and my grandfather was just eight years old when the telegrams arrived at our family’s North Carolina farm. Jesse was assigned to B Company of the 87th Chemical Mortar Battalion, occupying a tiny Belgian village called Sadzot, when German armor broke through the stretched American lines and began their final major stand in the cold winter of 1944/45. A couple days ago I visited Sadzot. My grandfather had taken my brother and I when I was ten, and now I got to return with Emily. We brought the framed picture of Jesse that had served as a prop in the background of my WWII-homefront short film. And we set it, and a laminated page that mentioned Jesse in a book about the battle, at the monument there. We also saw the site of the house he was serving guard duty outside of when the Germans broke through the woodline, now just a cluster of shrubs and trees in a field. In 2003, a man we met in Sadzot pointed this spot out to us, and let us know the house had burned that night. We took a charred brick from the foundation. The man we spoke with had been twelve-years-old, hiding in the woods with his brother and their cattle during the battle. Early M35 battle damaged SS relic helmet found in Manhay (Belgium). This beautiful piece of history belonged to a member of the regiment ‘Der Führer’ or Deutschland’ of the 2nd SS panzer division, Das Reich. This helmet clearly has shrapnel damage, and the soldier was likely KIA (Killed in Action) in December 1944. The M35 SS helmet still has parts of the single aluminum liner band, and the party shield was removed by 1940 regulations. Parts of the original Quist SS decal can be seen. Walkaround video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4lXzgvUorLk&t=17s The 7.5 cm Pak 40 was developed in 1939–1941 by Rheinmetall after reports of new Soviet tank designs. The 5 cm Pak 38 was still in testing at this point, but it appeared it would not be powerful enough to deal with these newer designs. However, while the Pak 38 made extensive use of light alloys to reduce overall gun weight. As a result, the Pak 40 used steel throughout its construction and was proportionally heavier than the 5 cm model. A modified version of the gun designed specifically for vehicle-mounting was the 7.5 cm KwK 40. The Pak 40 was the standard German anti-tank gun until the end of the war, 23,303 Pak 40s were produced and about 3,500 more were used to arm tank destroyers. This memorial was erected on the 50th celebration of the liberation of Luxembourg. The memorial contains several plaques of the American units who were involved in the battle. Last weekend we participated at the liberation festival in Brielle during the Dutch Commemoration weekend. We had the opportunity to set up an HQ at Café ‘de Kont van 't paard’ (@kontvanhetpaard). On Friday we took part in a vehicle tour of the area with participants of other groups. It was a very rainy day, so not a lot of photographs were made. On Saturday May 4th, our National Remembrance Day, we commemorate those who died for our freedom in and since the Second World War. We participated in a commemoration service outside the Church, and were silent for 2 minutes at 20:00hrs. During the day we had a very active display in the HQ. The sections did some training excercises in the town. On Sunday 5th, the National Liberation Day, we participated in a scripted battle against the Germans, Together with the Americans we liberated Brielle from German occipation. Every morning the Bugler woke us up with his Reveille, so we could start the day with a round of Physical Training. This was the first time that we were on full Platoon strength. What a great effort of the group! Let’s start and make this a tradition!
