Since being home from surgery, I’ve had Hawk in a playpen with the top covered by a crib sheet to keep her as quiet as possible so she can heal. Well, tonight I went to give medications and tuck her into bed and I see she’s busted out of her playpen and is roosting where she normally does, with her BFF, Goldie. She gave me this look of challenge, daring me to put her back in her recovery area. I left her be. 😅 She seemed to sleep well and is now mad because I won’t let her go outside with all those stitches. I told her it’s doctor’s orders but she doesn’t accept that. She’s home!! Many thanks to a friend who picked Hawk up after discharge this morning and drove to Colorado Springs to where Weldon was working and he then drove her home. 🎉UPDATE🎉: Hawk made it through surgery!! They had some difficulty intubating her due to her skull deformities and she had a little trouble coming out of the anesthesia, but overall the surgery went well. The eggs were really large and one actually split the oviduct and fell down into her abdomen. Dr. Fitzgerald left the oviduct intact as she felt it was too risky to leave her under anesthesia for too long. She will be spending the night in the hospital and we will be picking her up tomorrow. After swim/physical therapy snuggles with Judy. Judy came to us quite a few years ago after she and her sister were attacked by a dog. Her sister didn’t make it and Judy was severely injured and has since been unable to walk. We make sure she gets in 2 hours of pool (bathtub in the house) time every day and we do physical therapy on her right leg to keep her muscles and tendons movable. After bath is her favorite time of day because she loves to snuggle in her towel and just hang out. Sully always being the perfect gentleman for his lady love, Violet. Our sweet Sully is 8 years old. When he originally came to us we thought he was a pekin duck but as it turned out he was what’s called a “jumbo” pekin which means he was bred to grow exceptionally fast and be much heavier than a regular pekin duck. He has severe arthritis in his legs and is on medication to help with that. We’re keeping him as comfortable as we possibly can but I worry about him a lot. He’s having more difficulty getting around and I know “quality over quantity” is now coming into play for Sul. He’s still fairly active but limps quite a bit and is much slower. We keep his area of The Quack Shack packed with soft shavings to keep him comfortable but I know it’s only a matter of time now. Hang in there, Sully my man. In 2020, there was an egg farm that went bankrupt and could no longer afford to feed the thousands of hens they kept crammed into cages who were now starving. They allowed activists onto the farm to rescue as many hens as they could find homes for. As the activists were pulling hens out of cages to save, the farm workers were also pulling hens from the cages and killing them. At that moment, I told our transporter to fit as many as she could into her car and we would care for them. They arrived here filthy, scared, hungry, pale from never seeing the sun, and with overgrown toenails that had never touched the earth. The first time they saw sun and their tiny feet touched the earth, I cried buckets of tears. They have thrived with proper care and are the bravest, strongest, and loveliest of creatures. We have lost about half of them over the last 4 years (we took in 30), mostly due to egg related issues including ovarian cancers and other reproductive diseases. Look closely at this photo collage. When you purchase eggs to eat this is what you're paying for. Your dollars are directly funding the suffering of these hens. They're crammed into cages the size of a piece of notebook paper, never seeing the light of day. At 18 months of age they are considered "spent" and are then killed. This is a horrible existence. My apologies for promising an update yesterday and not getting there. By the time we got home, got Hawk settled and I caught up on medications and care for some of our other residents, it was late and I fell into bed. Then this morning I had to again travel to Colorado Springs to get her antibiotic prescription filled. Soooo, here I am finally. Hawk underwent an ultrasound yesterday to figure out where exactly the egg is sitting. Dr. Fitzgerald found the original egg offender that is about the size of an orange 😭 and then found another large egg right behind the other one. It's too far up her oviduct tract and too large to exit through her vent, so she will unfortunately have to undergo surgery. Our vet bill yesterday was $367.66 and her Clavamox antibiotic was $153.79. We haven't gotten any donations for yesterday's visit and any help with that would be immensely appreciated. I'm awful at fundraising and I really hate asking for help, but here I am asking. No amount is too small. We really need your help to cover the initial visit and when I receive the formal estimate for her surgery, I will post a formal fundraiser. Her surgery is scheduled for 05/29/2024. Dr. Fitzgerald wants her on a course of antibiotics prior to surgery to cover any oviduct infection. If she worsens between now and her surgery date they will perform surgery sooner. I was snapping some pics of Disco Duck the other day and I wanted to take a moment to share the interesting things Mother Nature does when it comes to illness in birds. Most of you know my poor dinosaur had a pretty severe rectal/phallus prolapse back in late October 2023 that required 2 surgeries to correct. During that time, he was going through his yearly molting process of dropping out old feathers and growing in new ones. Well, due to the illness and trauma he suffered, he developed what are called "stress bars" on his newly grown feathers. These are the lighter colored lines that are running horizontally across the feathers, which you can see really clearly in these photos. Thankfully the surgeries were successful and Disco is pretty unstressed nowadays. This condition will correct itself this fall when he molts again and his new feathers won't have the stress bars running across them. Fridays are best spent in the yard visiting with the handsomest boy in the whole world. Big Baby is a breed of chicken most generally exploited for human consumption. They are brutally killed at just 6 weeks of age, while still peeping babies. BB came to us after being rescued from a religious ritual where he would have been hung upside down by his feet and had his throat slit open to bleed to death, then tossed in a street gutter like garbage. So basically the options of his entire life were torture and death or torture and death. Instead, my best boy found sanctuary thanks to animal activists who cared enough to rescue him and 4 of his brothers and bring them here. He is particular breed of bird meant to grow exceptionally large in an exceptionally short amount of time. So many of these birds who are raised for meat suffer tremendously because of their weight (broken legs, inability to walk, suffocation from being so large) before they are killed. With a specialized diet and medications tailored to his heart issues, Big Baby will be turning 6 years old this summer. He is a treasure and my joy. He is beyond sweet and so very gentle. Be kind to animals. Please stop eating them. They are not food. Vegetables are food, chickens are sentient beings. Planning a wedding is a full production. Its not just making things look pretty. Happy Roosday! By now, I’m sure you all know my sweet boy, Angus. What you may not know is how he landed safely here at sanctuary. Like so many roosters, he was dumped and left to die of predation or starvation simply because he’s a boy. It’s the same story time and time again: Someone bought cute fluffy baby chicks and not so shockingly one turned out to be a boy. Once he started crowing the neighbors probably complained and of course no homes are available for roosters so they took him away from the only family he knew and dumped him alone in a parking lot at the edge of the woods at a nature site. Thankfully a kind woman who worked there contacted us and we were able to rescue him. Angus is lucky, but so many other roos suffer and die. Please please put an end to this by not buying baby chicks. Just don’t. It’s a brutal horrid industry for so many reasons, this being one of them. Be kind. Bug (in the back) and Missy. 🥰 Bug is still doing well despite her severe reproductive disease and impacted oviduct. We are keeping her as comfortable as we possibly can and she’s doing all of her important chickening , which includes relaxing with her sister. Modern hens have been genetically modified over the years to produce an ungodly amount of eggs (around 15 per year before for hatching like other birds and today nearing 260 per year) which causes many reproductive diseases and cancers thus shortening their lives dramatically. Please consider the suffering of these hens before you eat eggs. The cruelty hoisted upon these precious beings is immense, from being locked in cages and then ground up or suffocated after their “usefulness” has passed at about 18 months to debilitating reproductive diseases. Sweet little Smoosh. I cannot believe how well Smooshie is doing. Thanks to proper vet care, she went from death’s door to thriving. Don’t listen to backyard chicken groups who tell you that caring for chickens is “cheap” and “easy” or you can treat every condition at home. Chickens are time-consuming and expensive to care for if you’re doing it right. They feel pain just like any other animal. You wouldn’t treat your dog’s broken leg at home so don’t try to do it with chickens. They deserve the exact same consideration and care that any other animal does. If Smoosh were at her original home I know with 100% certainty she would be dead. Care for your birds like you’d care for any pet.
