Déception pour ce deuxième roman d'Elizabeth Jane Howard paru en 1956, et pourtant j'avais dévoré la saga des Cazalet... Le roman passe au microscope et disséque l'échec d'un mariage, celui d'Antonia et Conrad Fleming. L'histoire commence en 1950 à Londres, dans le quartier chic de Campden Hill. Alors que la narration avance, le lecteur remonte le temps dans les 4 parties suivantes jusqu'à la rencontre des 2 protagonistes en 1926 et observe à la "longue vue" les désillusions du mariage. La structure qui repose sur une chronologie inversée est particulièrement originale mais je crois qu'il m'a manqué un arrière-plan historique qui aurait rendu la réflexion sur le mariage plus consistante. 💍 Happy Anniversary to Hanna and Maurice Stern! 💕 Maurice Stern immigrated to New Orleans from Ermershausen, Bavaria in 1871, at age 16. Through his relative, Benjamin Newgass, he established himself at Lehmann, Newgass & Company, Cotton Factors, which became Lehman, Stern & Company in 1883 after Benjamin returned to England. In 1883, Maurice married native New Orleanian, Hanna Bloom. Their three children were S. Walter, Sarah, and Longue Vue founder, Edgar Bloom Stern. Hanna and Maurice Stern were married for 36 years until Maurice's death in 1919. 🥬 Did you know that the artichokes we eat are actually flowers that haven't bloomed? 💜 The artichoke, in the thistle family, is a cluster of many budding small flowers on an edible base. The flesh at the base of the thick bracts is known as the heart—what we tend to cook, eat, and enjoy! Artichokes, once flowered, should be left on the plant. It's best to harvest when the bracts are still tightly together, and the heart is fully edible. The leaves can be used as a tea, and the stems make a great broth! 🎉 Happy Birthday, Hanna! 🎂 Edgar Stern's mother, Hanna Stern, was deeply engaged in philanthropy, championing a number of artistic, children, and Jewish causes. She was the founding president of the New Orleans Symphony Orchestra and became the first female to serve on the Temple Sinai Board. Her own interest in interior design inspired and encouraged Edgar's own keen attention to style and detail. Her passions did not end there. She was president of the Touro-Shakespeare Almshouse Auxiliary, and a board member of Kingsley House, the Sylvania Williams Community Center, and the Red Cross. She was also a board member of the National Council of Jewish Women and the Jewish Children’s Home.
