In a sad turn of events, Darshanam Mogulaiah, a Padma Shri recipient celebrated for reviving the rare musical instrument ‘Kinnera’, has been found working at a construction site near Hyderabad due to financial hardships. Despite receiving a ₹1 crore grant from the Telangana government, the 73-year-old artist has faced severe financial strain, largely due to family emergencies and high medical expenses.
Mogulaiah, who devoted the state grant to fund his children’s weddings and to purchase land for building a house, has exhausted all his resources. The construction of his house halted midway due to a lack of funds. Further complicating his situation is the delay in the allotment of a promised 600-square yard plot by the state in the Rangareddy district, near Hyderabad.
The artist, a father to nine children, disclosed that one of his sons suffers from seizures, necessitating around ₹7,000 monthly for medicine alone, alongside regular medical tests and other expenditures. His financial burdens have been exacerbated by the state’s discontinuation of a ₹10,000 monthly honorarium, the cessation of which has not been explained to him.
This issue came to public attention through senior journalist Sucheta Dalal, who highlighted Mogulaiah’s plight on social media. The story caught the attention of Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) leader KT Rama Rao, who has assured personal intervention. “Thanks, Sucheta Ji for bringing this news to my attention…I will personally take care of Sri Moguliah’s family. My team @KTRoffice will reach out to him immediately,” Rao tweeted.
