Here is a breathtaking fossil softshell turtle (Axestemys byssinus) from the famous Green River Formation in Wyoming, USA. This formation has some of the best preserved turtles, giving us a snapshot peek into their life, millions of years ago.
This beautiful turtle spans a jaw-dropping 6 feet long and is likely the largest specimen of its type discovered in this important locality. Softshell turtles today as well are important apex predators in the aquatic systems they thrive in, and such fossil records are important reminders of their importance in maintaining healthy ecosystems.
