From as far back as mid-70s, the robo-voice machine fit the funk like a futuristic glove. Soon you could hardly move for androids at the funky mic, notably including Ray Parker Jr, The Jonzun Crew, Midnight Star and of course Herbie Hancock (not to mention those using the similarish talkbox, like Stevie Wonder and Zapp).
Herbie had been using vocoders as far back as 1978's Sunlight, and fired them into the top 10 with his stuttering 83 smash Rockit. If you're wondering who to blame for today's non-stop Autotune fest, he would be one of a few artists you'd definitely want in the dock.
