This weeks Little Gem's Hidden Gem is the mysterious Poulnabrone Dolmen in the heart of the Burren, County Clare. One of over 180 dolmen tombs across the island, Poulnabrone stands out on this moonlike surface and is estimated to be up to 6,000 years old. The name, Poulnabrone is often said to mean Hole of the Sorrows or Hole of the Quernstone.
When the site was excavated in the 1980's 33 human remains, including those of adults, children (and the remains of a much later Bronze Age infant) were found buried underneath it. Also discovered were various stone and bone objects that would have been placed with the dead at the time of interment. The human remains and objects are estimated to have been buried intermittently during the 600 year period between 3800 and 3200 BC.
