Dad was diagnosed with HPV-related throat cancer in 2019 after noticing a lump on his neck when looking back at photos from my 21st birthday. He developed a rare airways disease due to radiation treatment and can no longer eat or drink, only liquid through his PEG tube. He also has a trach tube to secure his airways and help him breathe. He fights the consequences of this sinister disease. Every. Single. Day.
We want all Australians to know:
🧣 There is NO screening for Head and Neck Cancer: early detection is key
🧣 Tongue cancers are rising in younger women
🧣 70% of all tonsil and base of tongue cancers are caused by HPV– a virus that 4 out of 5 people will have at some point in their life.
🧣HPV related cancers are INCREASING in healthy, non-smokers aged 35 – 55. There is a vaccine available for all high school students.
🧣Symptoms could be a sore throat, mild earache, ulcer inside your mouth
