AZT Day 46-Part 1
Happy Cinco De Mayo!

Was so excited for what lies ahead today. Christy took me to the trail head of the AZT where it descends into the Grand Canyon on the Kaibab Trail. This is over a 7 mile descent into the canyon and to the Colorado River! Another storm and wind event was on its way! (Go figure) but my plan was to arrive at the Bright Angel Campground and set up before it hit.
What an amazing journey down into the canyon! I even enjoyed the dark swirling clouds that were moving my way! Passed plenty of day hikers and backpackers and enjoyed chatting with them all! I guess it might be obvious that I am a thru-hiker because everyone asked how long I have been out!
The beauty of the Grand Canyon was on full display and I enjoyed every step further down!
Arrived at the designated campsite when the wind started to kick up! A few rocks came sliding down the canyon walls so it was time for a change of plans! Since I cruised down so early I had options! (Video) my problem was will the Rangers allow me to switch spots?
Oh well! I figured my next step was to walk up to the Phantom Ranch and snack shack for some chips, cookies and a cold one to relax with! I walked back to camp and a small group of backpackers arrived for their last night in the canyon. The wind at this point was really gusting and they graciously told me to stay under the shelter with them! They even developed a nice cover story to tell the Ranger!(Who never came by!) I enjoyed talking to them and they had plenty of questions about my thru-hike! Later that evening the rain started and with the gusts of wind blew it into the shelter! Oh well, time to set up the rain fly. (Photo) Slept pretty comfortably knowing I wouldn’t have wet gear in the morning.
Tomorrow was going to be a big day hiking the 14 miles out on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.

Happy Trails
Stix
