⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 2024 📚: 25
A Clash of Kings (A Song of Ice and Fire 2) by George R.R. Martin

To be honest, I was a little disappointed by this book, though also, not surprised.

I’m not a huge fan of Martin’s writing style. In the last third of A Game of Thrones his style seemed to change, and it continued in this book. We get a ton of scenes with lots of detail, usually it’s times where not much is happening plot wise. And I love that! I love books that write the small details in a compelling way. But then when the plot picks up he sort of drops the ball. Major plot points seem to happen way too fast or off-screen and it’s jarring, but not in a fun, shocking way. Maybe it’s because of the multiple POV style, or maybe just to keep the books from being 2,000 pages each, but I just don’t get it and it detracts from the experience for me.

Also, this book was almost 1,000 pages and I feel like there were very few explosive moments. At one point I laughed pretty hard, and once or twice I was kind of shocked, but nothing really happened. Which is fine, I don’t mind a slow book sometimes. I was only bored for a few pages here and there (mostly during the battle scenes honestly, I’m just not a fan and I don’t think they’re written that well here 😬). But I still expected that more would happen in this book.

I do think it’s a good book though, despite my issues, and I did enjoy it. I definitely plan to continue the series (after a bit of a break).
