How to Cast a Magic Circle:

Casting a circle is an important step for many practitioners when performing a ritual. This is an act to designate a sacred space that will serve as an energetic container for the ritual.
There are different reasons why people cast a circle, like for protection, or to summon the energy of the elements, or because it works as an energetic magnifier.
One funny thing that I have noticed, is that many people decide to cast a circle before celebrating sabbats and esbats, but not for spellwork. But in my case it is quite the opposite, I don't cast a circle to celebrate the sabbats or for my moon magic rituals, but I do it for example before working with Fire magic. What about you? Am I the only weirdo?

This is the way I cast the circle, as you can see, it might be very influenced by The Gardnerian Book of Shadows (the book in the pic):
- Intention: To me it's important to keep in mind what I am willing to do within this circle. It could be worshipping, or working with the energy of Fire.
- Consecrating the elements: I concentrate energy into them, with the help of a ritual knife (athame) or a wand. I consecrate incense and lit charcoal (Air and Fire), and water with salt (Water and Earth).
- Casting the Circle: With the knife in my dominant hand, I draw an invisible circle as I walk clockwise.
-Cleansing and Charging: I sprinkle the saltwater to cleanse the space, and drop a bit of incense over the charcoal to charge the circle.
- Calling the quarters. From the East, I call the element of Air, before I move to the south of the circle to call on Fire, then I go West to call on Water and I finish facing North to call on Earth.

What are the steps that work for you? What do you do differently?

I don't leave the circle until I am done, and close it. But if there is any kind of urgency that forces me to leave the circle, I visualise a gateway and I step through it, closing it behind me.
