I thought it would be interesting to take a look at some unserved markets from KLM’s hub in AMS, with a particular focus on the United States.

In a Routes Online interview in 2016, AMS’s Director of Marketing mentioned the airports’ top targets were: Dallas, Orlando, Las Vegas, Tampa, and San Diego.

Amsterdam’s Route Shop target market page reflects this, showing the following markets as targets: San Jose (SJC), Tampa, Las Vegas, San Diego, Phoenix, and Denver.

What’s happened since 2016 –

DFW was launched in May 2017 by American, with an average load of 80%. KLM offered the service from April 2008-Oct 2015 with an average of 77% load.

LAS – TUI Netherlands offered a nonstop from AMS from Jun 2012 – Oct 2013, average load of 45%. KLM launched a nonstop in June 2019 with an average load of 90%. The flight is currently operating.

MCO – Delta launched their nonstop in April 2018 with an average load of 88%. The flight was suspended March 2020 and was announced to be taken over by KLM last May with a Nov 2021 start date. The flight never launched and is awaiting a new launch date.

TPA – Delta launched a nonstop in May 2019 with a daily 767. The flight operated from May – October 2019, with an average load of 80%, and was set to resume in April 2020 but never did. No resumption date is known.

Amsterdam currently has nonstop service to the U.S. on KLM and/or partner Delta to MIA, IAH, AUS ATL, IAD, JFK, BOS, DTW, ORD, MSP, SLC, SEA, PDX, LAS, SFO and LAX.

Unfortunately, international passenger demand is pretty hard to come by and is not shared by the DOT as domestic demand is. I tried to get some data the best I could.

Data for passengers weekly each way (PWEW). Sorry, it is for different years, it is all I could find.
DEN 511 (2018)
MCO 469 (2018-2019)
TPA 287 (2019)

Local market demand is interesting to look at, but the reality is that KLM is a hub and spoke airline, focusing on connections, not just the local market.

KLM will sell you everything from LAS-TLV to AUS-DEL. Their massive AMS network connects passengers across the globe.

Which U.S route would you like to see KLM launch next?
